{"id":143186,"date":"2024-07-25T14:07:51","date_gmt":"2024-07-25T21:07:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.lankaweb.com\/news\/items\/?p=143186"},"modified":"2024-07-25T14:07:51","modified_gmt":"2024-07-25T21:07:51","slug":"eu-refutes-claim-it-conducted-an-election-polls-survey-in-sri-lanka","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lankaweb.com\/news\/items\/2024\/07\/25\/eu-refutes-claim-it-conducted-an-election-polls-survey-in-sri-lanka\/","title":{"rendered":"EU refutes claim it conducted an &#8216;election polls survey&#8217; in Sri Lanka"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>Courtesy Yahoo News<\/em><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The European Union said it had not conducted a survey that showed Sri Lanka&#8217;s opposition alliance was projected to win in the upcoming presidential election, contrary to false claims shared in news reports and on social media.&nbsp;A spokesperson for the EU&nbsp;told AFP the information was &#8220;false.&#8221;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;According to a new survey by the European Union, the compass will win in the presidential election,&#8221; read the Sinhala-language headline of a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/perma.cc\/DHR5-YG8A\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">news article<\/a>&nbsp;published by Sri Lankan website LankaeNews&nbsp;on July 16.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The opposition coalition&nbsp;National People&#8217;s Power&nbsp;(NPP)&nbsp;is often referred to as &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/anuradisanayake\/status\/1796388269221175453\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the compass<\/a>&#8221; because of the party&#8217;s symbol (<a href=\"https:\/\/perma.cc\/A2WR-AE5S\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">archived link<\/a>). Its candidate is Anura Kumara Dissanayake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The news report went on to say that 53 percent of the purported survey&#8217;s respondents preferred NPP, while 24 percent picked Sajith Premadasa,&nbsp;leader of Sri Lanka&#8217;s main opposition party Samagi Jana Balawegaya. The&nbsp;Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna &#8212; the party of deposed president Gotabaya Rajapaksa &#8212; got six percent. It has yet to field any candidate as of July 23.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The outlet also published the report in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/perma.cc\/449X-BNEE\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">English<\/a>, and shared the false claim in both languages on its Facebook page&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/perma.cc\/DHR5-YG8A\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">here&nbsp;<\/a>and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/perma.cc\/3V7P-2JFJ\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s.yimg.com\/ny\/api\/res\/1.2\/xnPggMuOKNk6w8ouIZdZ1g--\/YXBwaWQ9aGlnaGxhbmRlcjt3PTk2MDtoPTQ2OTtjZj13ZWJw\/https:\/\/media.zenfs.com\/en\/afp_factcheck_uk_202\/42fd2f470ca4e1119ef21807196a3e4f\" alt=\"<span&gt;Screenshot of the news article with the false claim, taken on July 22<\/span&gt;\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Screenshot of the news article with the false claim, taken on July 22<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Local media outlet PFP News published an article with the same false claim<a href=\"https:\/\/perma.cc\/97H3-F67D\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">&nbsp;here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Similar claims were also shared on Facebook&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/perma.cc\/P4B7-BJTJ?type=image\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/perma.cc\/3TL6-5743?type=image\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The constitution mandates the Election Commission of Sri Lanka to hold the presidential elections between&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/elections.gov.lk\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/media-release\/2024\/MR_2024_07_E.pdf\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">September 17 and October 16<\/a>&nbsp;(<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20240722055247\/https:\/\/elections.gov.lk\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/media-release\/2024\/MR_2024_07_E.pdf\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">archived link<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The election commission said that it would announce the date of the presidential election before the end of this month.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It will be the first&nbsp;presidential election in the South Asian country since it&nbsp;was hit by an economic crisis in 2022, one which triggered widespread protests and led to the resignation of Rajapaksa.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the EU said it had not conducted such a survey.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Fabricated survey<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Lars Bredal, EU&#8217;s Charg\u00e9 d&#8217;affaires of the delegation to Sri Lanka and the Maldives, told AFP on July 19 that the bloc was not involved in any such election polls survey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The European Union has not conducted election polls survey, the information stating otherwise is false,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The bloc&#8217;s mission in Colombo also posted a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/eu_in_sri_lanka\/status\/1814183741318893802?s=46&amp;t=iXgSNbJGi5WJvtw4RLSBYA\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">statement<\/a>&nbsp;on social media that similarly denied it had conducted election polls survey in Sri Lanka (<a href=\"https:\/\/perma.cc\/3S4G-D4BG\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">archived link<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Saman Sri Rathnayake, commissioner general of elections at the Sri Lanka Elections Commission has previously told AFP that they &#8220;have not issued any approval or any permission to anyone to do this sort of opinion polls or surveys&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>AFP has previously&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/factcheck.afp.com\/doc.afp.com.34RR7BD\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">debunked&nbsp;<\/a>claims that the UN refugee agency UNHCR had conducted a survey on the upcoming election.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Courtesy Yahoo News The European Union said it had not conducted a survey that showed Sri Lanka&#8217;s opposition alliance was projected to win in the upcoming presidential election, contrary to false claims shared in news reports and on social media.&nbsp;A spokesperson for the EU&nbsp;told AFP the information was &#8220;false.&#8221;
