Shut Up!<\/em><\/strong>). The portentous perils under a Binara moon this week make us echo&nbsp;<strong>SBD de Silva\u2019s advice<\/strong>&nbsp;to those seeking to unravel our dis-ease: \u2018If you wish&nbsp;<strong><em>to learn about the state of the economy, talk a walk along the pavement<\/em><\/strong>, look at what is being sold,&nbsp;<strong>&amp; where &amp; how it is made.&nbsp;<\/strong>And<strong>&nbsp;<em>why we cannot make it here?<\/em><\/strong>\u2019 It is to SBD de Silva, author of the classic&nbsp;<em>The&nbsp;<strong>Political Economy of Underdevelopment<\/strong><\/em>, to whom this sketchy blog&nbsp;<strong><em>ee<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;is dedicated. He passed away on 15 June 2018, at the age of 92.&nbsp;<strong><em>ee<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;blog began on 21 September 2018. Even more interesting times unfolded thenceforth. In such extremely \u2018interesting times\u2019 the world is facing now,&nbsp;<strong><em>ee<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;would like to express our appreciation to all our supporters &amp; critics!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>*<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018You go to the Bazaar &amp; you talk nicely with the shopkeeper &amp; get a good discount.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Why would you annoy him by asking&nbsp;<strong><em>stupid questions about the manufacturers?\u2019<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2013&nbsp;<em>Sri Lanka&nbsp;<\/em>Daily Mirror<em>&nbsp;Comment on News from Lebanon<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>*<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This weekend saw the&nbsp;<strong>presidential election<\/strong>&nbsp;uncurtain its expensive&nbsp;<strong>democratic diorama<\/strong>, with little mention (at least in English) of our actual political &amp; economic challenges, leaving the country in its state of suspense. Yet more drama lies in store, and all from Negombo to Kattankudy &amp; Jaffna &amp; Chennai &amp; Geneva, all must play their part. This election, we\u2019re told, is about the US &amp; India \u2018prying\u2019 a \u2018debt-ridden\u2019 Sri Lanka away from China\u2019s \u2018grip\u2019. Thus spaketh&nbsp;<em>Bloomberg<\/em>&nbsp;<em>Intelligence<\/em>, another private lip service of the US State Department. It turns out we\u2019re being \u2018trapped in the US-led efforts to contain China\u2019 (see Shamindra Ferdinando, Unprecedented 3-Cornered 2024 Polls midst External Interventions,&nbsp;<strong><em>ee Sovereignty<\/em><\/strong>). So, should we just bend or go limp in order that the NATO (S)Quad not be given further chances to devastate the country as they have done &amp; would attempt, anyway, until they are rendered unable?&nbsp;<strong><em>Return<\/em>&nbsp;<em>to Sender!<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>*<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 \u2018<strong><em>Bombshell<\/em><\/strong>\u2019 &amp; \u2018A&nbsp;<strong><em>Can of Worms<\/em><\/strong>\u2019 is how local media greeted NPP presidential aspirant&nbsp;<strong>Anura Kumara Dissanayake<\/strong>\u2019s revelation in Kurunegala, on Tuesday, absolving former President Gotabhaya Rajapakse for the country\u2019s 2022 downturn. So what was all that aragalaying all about? Then there was yet another \u2018bombshell\u2019 \u2013 when another presidential candidate, former Justice Minister Wijeydasa Rajapakse, pointed an invisible finger at the US &amp; India for organizing the April 2019 terror. The terror turns out have been funded through the 2017 changes to the foreign exchange act, as demanded by the IMF. Here then is the wiggling tale of how&nbsp;<strong>dollars<\/strong>&nbsp;&amp;&nbsp;<strong>remittances<\/strong>&nbsp;were \u2018legally\u2019 disappeared (see&nbsp;<strong><em>ee Random Notes &amp; ee Focus<\/em><\/strong>), which is usually portrayed as resulting from&nbsp;<em>our<\/em>&nbsp;ignorance &amp;&nbsp;<em>corruption<\/em>\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>*<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 Just before Sri Lankans stepped up to our fabled polling booths to show how hip we are to the exorbitant democratic draperies of the imperialist world, we were&nbsp;<strong>given yet another powerful jolt by the USA<\/strong>, who demands that Sri Lanka &amp; the \u2018Indo-Pacific\u2019 accede to their dictat.&nbsp;<em>Or else!<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<strong>Soon after a Yemeni hypersonic missile<\/strong>&nbsp;jolted military installations in Tel Aviv, \u2018Israel\u2019 is said to have \u2018retaliated\u2019&nbsp;<strong>by exploding pagers &amp; walkie-talkies across Lebanon<\/strong>&nbsp;on Tuesday &amp; Wednesday, 17-18 September. They also<strong>&nbsp;targeted hospitals, pharmacies<\/strong>, markets, shops, homes and vehicles. The exploding devices are said to have been tinkered during importation. So much for&nbsp;<strong><em>\u2018smart\u2019<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;homes &amp; patriots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The so-called \u2018<strong>oil-rich\u2019 West Asians<\/strong>&nbsp;(Arabs, Iranian, who transmitted science &amp; technology from East to West) have&nbsp;<strong>not invested in their own secure technology<\/strong>. And&nbsp;<strong>neither has Sri Lanka<\/strong>. And this is what&nbsp;<strong><em>ee<\/em><\/strong>\u2019s 6<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;anniversary issue is all about.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<strong>The USA&nbsp;<\/strong>\u2013 the latest supreme conductor of the&nbsp;<strong>Concert of Europe<\/strong>, with colonies (in all but name) across Asia (from Turkey to India to Japan &amp; Oceania), &amp; Africa &amp; the Americas (from the Arctic\u2019s Beaufort Sea to Tierra del Fuego) \u2013 who funds &amp; arms &amp; gently nurses Israel,&nbsp;<strong>claims not to know&nbsp;<em>who did it?!<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;Their clangourous media, led by&nbsp;<strong><em>CNN<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;&amp;&nbsp;<strong><em>BBC<\/em><\/strong>, claim the \u2018Israeli\u2019 operation only targeted \u2018terrorists\u2019, and point shaky fingers along a supply chain from Taiwan &amp; Japan to Qatar &amp; Hungary, and now Bulgaria &amp; Norway. To embed an explosive trigger within the new batch of pagers, \u2018Israel\u2019 was provided access to the&nbsp;<strong>supply chain<\/strong>&nbsp;of these devices, surreptitiously adding an explosive component &amp; remote triggering mechanism into the Lebanon-bound shipment (see&nbsp;<strong><em>ee Random Notes<\/em><\/strong>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>*<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; It is most apropos therefore to peer into the&nbsp;<strong>controls over new technologies<\/strong>&nbsp;especially by celebritified(!) \u2018entrepreneurs\u2019 such as the&nbsp;<strong>South African &amp; US settler Elon Musk<\/strong>, the head (who turns out to not exactly be the \u2018founder\u2019) of electric vehicle (<strong>EV<\/strong>) maker&nbsp;<strong>Tesla<\/strong>. Musk purportedly monopolizes certain tech as well as so-called (heavily corporatized) \u2018social media\u2019. After all, Musk is famous for twitting, \u2018<strong><em>We will coup whoever we want!<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;Deal with it,\u2019&nbsp;<strong>after the US coup against Bolivia<\/strong>\u2019s Aymara President Evo Morales in 2020. &nbsp;Musk wishes to grab&nbsp;<strong>Bolivia\u2019s lithium<\/strong>, though he later backtracked: \u2018We get our lithium from Australia.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<strong><em>ee<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;already stated, Musk \u2018has to perform as a celebrity frontman for organized capitalism\u2019s more anonymous asset managers\u2019. We therefore assess the JVP\u2019s Sunil Handunhetti\u2019s measure of Musk as an \u2018<strong><em>economic hitman<\/em><\/strong>\u2019, after the still-President Ranil Wickremesinghe touted Musk as yet another possible salvager of Sri Lanka\u2019s economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; As a \u2018celebrity\u2019 entrepreneur he has to mimic a certain egoism, swagger &amp; je ne sais quoi. Yet we know why he must be basking in former US president&nbsp;<strong>Trump<\/strong>&nbsp;recently calling him the \u2018<strong>greatest cutter<\/strong>\u2019, for his&nbsp;<strong>mass layoffs&nbsp;<\/strong>at&nbsp;<strong>Twitter<\/strong>&nbsp;&amp; Tesla. And it is not a matter of setting up a faux assembly line in&nbsp;<strong>Kuliyapitiya<\/strong>&nbsp;with the aid of the import-mafia\u2019s&nbsp;<strong>Ceylon Motor Traders Association<\/strong>. Indeed, for all his \u2018disruption\u2019, Musk has to operate within the \u2018culture\u2019 of the US automobile industry, and its supply chains, in Japan, in China. His \u2018electric\u2019 green economy has been&nbsp;<strong>enabled by the state enforcement of&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>\u2018climate\u2019 laws<\/strong>. Meanwhile, their media ignores that China\u2019s EV sales in July just surpassed 50% of all car sales; and instead rant about needing 100% North America &amp; EU tariffs against the \u2018unfair\u2019 competition of China\u2019s EVs (under $20,000, a fraction of US costs\u2026 The whites appear to be looking more than acting green!)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Indeed, Musk may end up suppressing the \u2018industrialization\u2019 of our own abundant&nbsp;<strong>highest-quality graphene&nbsp;<\/strong>into batteries. Graphene batteries offer significant energy density, charge speed, and overall efficiency, over both lead-acid &amp; the&nbsp;<strong>lithium-ion<\/strong>&nbsp;batteries that Musk uses (see&nbsp;<strong><em>ee Focus<\/em><\/strong>). Yet those invested in lithium batteries, like Musk, may claim graphene is more expensive, and difficult to mass produce at scale, than traditional batteries.&nbsp;<strong><em>ee<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;sees no better time than now for Sri Lanka to develop its graphene and make our own high-tech e-batteries?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>*<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The covert US-backed terrorist attacks this week on Lebanon reminds how our countries have<strong>&nbsp;little sovereignty&nbsp;<\/strong>over who &amp; what comes in &amp; goes out of our borders. This is evident, not just with capital &amp; dollar transfers and&nbsp;<strong>ports<\/strong>, but in the maritime boundaries as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; \u2018Why did successive governments adopt policies to aid&nbsp;<strong>fraudulent traders to misdeclare country of origin\u2019<\/strong>&nbsp;(asks former Director General of Commerce Sri Lanka, Sonali Wijeratne,&nbsp;<em>Great import\/re-export scam set to destroy local production<\/em>,&nbsp;<strong><em>ee Economists<\/em><\/strong>)<em>.&nbsp;<\/em>Indeed, in April 2024, Customs trade unions, themselves under attack by shipping company owners (led by Maersk) for being ornery &amp;&nbsp;<em>corrupt<\/em>, instead pointed out how the new Customs Ordinance handed over executive power to private shippers. They added: \u2018The government of good governance, which existed previously, had annulled the Foreign Exchange Control Act and \u2026created relaxed policies [that] halted the scope for regulating foreign exchange in this country, and all of us are having to&nbsp;<strong>suffer its consequences as of today<\/strong>.\u2019<em><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>*<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is one more reason to simply despise &amp; reject wholesale this&nbsp;<strong>media business of labelling politicians alone as&nbsp;<em>corrupt<\/em><\/strong>. Let\u2019s honor those national politicians who have strived to build the country out of&nbsp;<strong>500 years &amp; more<\/strong>, of devastation. Less than half the country was deemed literate when the English claimed to exit (but didn\u2019t!) in 1948. Only 1% of the population was gauged literate in English. And infant mortality was 27%!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; What continues to hold us down is not<em>&nbsp;corrupt<\/em>&nbsp;at all. It is&nbsp;<strong>all perfectly legal!<\/strong>&nbsp;Like their genocidal wars on Korea &amp; Myanmar. Like their genocides in Congo &amp; Yemen &amp; Gaza. Where are the UN \u2018peacekeepers\u2019, the loudmouthed UNHRC etc, basking in the sun on doing-goodism and ending up very-well on dollar payrolls?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<strong><em>And<\/em>&nbsp;<em>as for our economy.<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;It is all legit, this merchant &amp; moneylender capitalism \u2013 to which we have been enchained. This Import-Export colonial plantation economy. But don\u2019t depend on the USA\u2019s IMF to tell us any different:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>*<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;\u2018If we analyse the key issues other than \u2018Cost of Living\u2019 \u2018<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>that a typical consumer is up against [it\u2019s] \u2018<strong><em>Corruption<\/em><\/strong><em>\u2019<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These were the key findings of the&nbsp;<strong>IMF 16-point plan<\/strong>&nbsp;that was presented.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2013 Rohantha Athukorala, Qualitative Study by India\u2019s<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Quantum Research Agency (see&nbsp;<strong><em>ee Economists<\/em><\/strong>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>*<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is the&nbsp;<em>uncorrupt<\/em>&nbsp;&amp; innumerate&nbsp;<strong>IMF<\/strong>&nbsp;that calculates \u2013 after 500 years &amp; more of this flim-flummery about the wonders of English colonialism \u2013 that&nbsp;<strong><em>somehow we owe them<\/em><\/strong>. That what they have been doing across the world should continue to be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The&nbsp;<strong>history of the franchise in Sri Lanka is not just of preserving colonial control through deindustrialization<\/strong>. It is a story of&nbsp;<strong>trying to prevent the actual role of the people<\/strong>, while presenting facades of representation: from official &amp; unofficial representatives, appointed &amp; educated (read:&nbsp;<em>civilized<\/em>), merchants &amp; moneylenders, communal members, proportional representatives, etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; A true history choreographing the&nbsp;<strong>ballet of the ballot in the shadow of the bullet&nbsp;<\/strong>would array the&nbsp;<strong><em>delights<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;of&nbsp;<strong><em>76 years of English parliamentary parlez-vous<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;while underwearing the straitjackets of a franchise limited by finance &amp; fiat. At the first election held under colonial auspices in 1947, planters carried guns to deter workers, upper castes blockaded lower castes out of chaste voting booths, etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; After targeting the iron &amp; steel workshops and related tool &amp; weapon makers, the English (&amp; that cavalcade of invaders before them) prioritized the destruction of a complex irrigation system on which the solidarity of the village was based. We certainly learn little about the purana Gam Sabha (village council) system, but it appears to be, given the historical context, much more&nbsp;<strong><em>\u2018democratic\u2019<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;than what claims to rule the country now. And this now, contentious as it is, still remains far more democratic than what transpired under colonial rule before 1948.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Instead of clasping our long Sinhala Buddhist culture &amp; civilization of production and the powerful hand of the state the guides such endeavours, a still-colonial education system &amp; media &amp; other ideological machines (you\u2019re probably reading this on an imported device subject to all manner of imported \u2018impulses\u2019!) instead promotes an imported&nbsp;<strong>romanticism &amp; fantasy<\/strong>&nbsp;which amounts to&nbsp;<strong>anarchism &amp; nihilism<\/strong>&nbsp;and inevitable&nbsp;<strong><em>despair<\/em><\/strong>.
