{"id":147256,"date":"2025-01-10T15:14:47","date_gmt":"2025-01-10T22:14:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.lankaweb.com\/news\/items\/?p=147256"},"modified":"2025-01-10T15:14:47","modified_gmt":"2025-01-10T22:14:47","slug":"media-lens-manufacturing-consent-for-regime-change-in-syria","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lankaweb.com\/news\/items\/2025\/01\/10\/media-lens-manufacturing-consent-for-regime-change-in-syria\/","title":{"rendered":"Media Lens \u2013 Manufacturing Consent For Regime Change In Syria"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>braveneweurope.com<\/em><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n<p>Western state and corporate media have become propaganda outlets, trying to keep us in the dark<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pbs.twimg.com\/media\/Gg9DZHZXIAAxAl5?format=png&amp;name=small\" alt=\"Image\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Monitoring corporate media performance for 25 years \u2013 week after week, war after war \u2013 has done little to diminish our dismay at the robotic automaticity of \u2018mainstream\u2019 enthusiasm for US-authored regime change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each time, without fail, thousands of media commentators function, not as critical-thinking individuals, but as cookie-cutter cogs in a propaganda printing machine stamping the word \u2018GOOD\u2019 on the public mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is not that we are told what to think \u2013 they know we mostly just skim the headlines \u2013 we are told what to&nbsp;<em>feel<\/em>. The result is a thin veneer of symbolic headline \u2018news\u2019 painting a positive picture followed by \u2018in-depth\u2019 content that hides as much as it reveals. This \u2018coverage\u2019 is not comprehensible and is not intended to be because it serves the needs of power rather than truth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The latest propaganda blitz is particularly remarkable given that the Hay\u2019at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) group led by Mohammed al-Jolani that overthrew Syria\u2019s Assad dictatorship in December is a proscribed terrorist group under UK law. The UK government website currently&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/gov.uk\/government\/publications\/proscribed-terror-groups-or-organisations--2\/proscribed-terrorist-groups-or-organisations-accessible-version\">reads<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u2018Hay\u2019at Tahrir al-Sham\u201d should be treated as alternative names for the organisation which is already proscribed under the name Al Qa\u2019ida.\u2019<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Donald Trump&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/realDonaldTrump\/status\/372795204710830080\">put<\/a>&nbsp;it more bluntly in August 2013:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u2018Remember, all these freedom fighters\u201d in Syria want to fly planes into our buildings.\u2019<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>A 2016 Amnesty&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/documents\/mde24\/4227\/2016\/en\/\">report<\/a>&nbsp;described abuses carried out by Jabhat al Nusra and associated groups, now known as HTS, in Syria:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u2018The cases of abduction, torture and summary killings documented by Amnesty International offer a glimpse into the reality of life under armed opposition groups in Aleppo and Idleb governorates. Civilians who live under constant threat of indiscriminate attack by government forces simply for living in areas controlled by armed groups have suffered abuse at the hands of these groups as they assert their authority through rough justice\u201d and cruel punishments. Media activists, journalists, lawyers, humanitarian workers and others have been subjected to abduction and torture and other ill-treatment at the hands of armed groups that form part of the Army of Conquest and Aleppo Conquest coalitions.\u2019<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>None of this has deterred the \u2018mainstream\u2019 cheerleaders using endless pictures of smiling Syrians, with women notably to the fore in a brazen attempt to exploit #MeToo kudos. See&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/medialens\/status\/1866021321949209057\">here<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/medialens\/status\/1866023872350257259\">here<\/a>&nbsp;for examples. One typically cheerful BBC home page&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/medialens\/status\/1865675651237224455\">reported<\/a>&nbsp;\u2018relief\u2019 at HTS\u2019s violent regime change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After years spent propagandising for this result, a Guardian&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/medialens\/status\/1866026229268148225\">home page<\/a>&nbsp;was similarly full of celebration. US journalist Glenn Greenwald&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SystemUpdate_\/status\/1866507296119115850\">commented<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u2018The U.S. lists Mohammed al-Jolani as a wanted terrorist, yet he is now being reframed as a polished, blazer-wearing rebel willing to partner with the West.\u2019<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Thus, a bizarre Telegraph headline&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AlanRMacLeod\/status\/1865009325669818430\">read<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u2018Moderate\u201d jihadist leader storms Syria \u2013 but tells troops not to frighten children\u2019<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The BBC&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/cpq9l24ledpo\">commented<\/a>&nbsp;of HTS:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u2018It previously publicly broke ranks with al-Qaeda, although it remains proscribed as a terrorist group by the UK, as well as the UN, the US, Turkey and other countries.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u2018Questions remain over whether it has completely renounced those links, but its message in the run-up to Assad\u2019s deposition has been one of inclusiveness and a rejection of violence.\u2019<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Words are what matter, it seems, even if the claimed \u2018rejection of violence\u2019 is challenged somewhat by HTS having just conquered Syria using methods that owe more to Hitler\u2019s&nbsp;<em>blitzkrieg<\/em>&nbsp;than Gandhi\u2019s&nbsp;<em>saty\u0101graha<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Words also mean a lot to the Observer\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/2024\/dec\/15\/the-observer-view-on-syria-we-must-reach-out-a-hand-of-friendship-to-damascus\">editors<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u2018So far, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), the formerly al-Qaida-linked Islamist militia that led the charge against Assad, has belied its extremist roots with moderately reassuring words.\u2019 &nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Former head of MI6 Sir John Sawers&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/cpq9l24ledpo\">went<\/a>&nbsp;so far as to say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u2018It would be rather ridiculous, actually, if we\u2019re unable to engage with the new leadership in Syria because of a proscription dating back 12 years.\u2019<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>No surprise, then, when media&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/uk-could-consider-removing-proscription-syrias-hts-says-minister-2024-12-09\">reported<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u2018UK could consider removing proscription of Syria\u2019s HTS, says minister\u2019<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The US having already led the way in that regard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Economist and former politician Yanis Varoufakis&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/yanisvaroufakis\/status\/1866019780408279110\">captured<\/a>&nbsp;it perfectly:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u2018The Western media\u2019s duplicity has broken all records. When jihadists entered Kabul, ousting the US regime, it was the end of the world. Now that jihadists have entered Damascus to overthrow a secular enemy of the West, it is a triumph of the human spirit.\u2019<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Indeed, this is an eerily exact re-run of supposedly independent and impartial media performance celebrating US-UK regime change in Iraq. On 9 April 2003, as US tanks stormed Baghdad, the BBC\u2019s Nicholas Witchell beamed:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u2018It is absolutely, without a doubt, a vindication of the strategy.\u2019<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>ITN\u2019s Tom Bradby declared: \u2018This war has been a major success\u2019 (ITN Evening News, 10 April 2003). According to ITN\u2019s John Irvine, the outlook was rosy:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u2018A war of three weeks has brought an end to decades of Iraqi misery.\u2019 (ITN Evening News, 9 April 2003)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>At least one million Iraqis&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2015\/03\/26\/body-count-report-reveals-least-13-million-lives-lost-us-led-war-terror\">died<\/a>&nbsp;in the hell that was being unleashed. In 2016, the BBC&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-middle-east-36083800\">reported&nbsp;<\/a>of Iraq:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u2018Grinding poverty has made the trafficking of kidneys and other organs a phenomenon in Baghdad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018About 22.5% of Iraq\u2019s population of nearly 30 million people live in abject poverty, according to World Bank statistics from 2014.\u2019<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The same media cookie-cutter cogs greeted the overthrow of the Libyan government \u2013 different \u2018rebels\u2019, same Western bombers. As the Libyan state collapsed, the BBC\u2019s Nick Robinson observed that Downing Street \u2018will see this, I\u2019m sure, as a triumphant end\u2019 (BBC News at Six, 20 October 2011). In Washington, the BBC\u2019s Ian Pannell surmised that Obama \u2018is feeling that his foreign policy strategy has been vindicated \u2013 that his critics have been proven wrong\u2019. (BBC News online, 21 October 2011)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On and on, this was an exact repetition of Iraq with little or no reflection on the results of that earlier \u2018intervention\u2019. A 2016 report into the Libya war by the UK House of Commons Foreign Affairs Committee summarised the consequences:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u2018The result was political and economic collapse, inter-militia and inter-tribal warfare, humanitarian and migrant crises, widespread human rights violations, the spread of Gaddafi regime weapons across the region and the growth of ISIL in North Africa.\u2019<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>That NATO-led \u2018intervention\u2019 killed an estimated 40,000 people. Once one of Africa\u2019s most advanced countries for health care and education, Libya became a failed state, with the collapse of essential services, the re-emergence of slave markets and a raging civil war with murderous ethnic cleansing. The West\u2019s alleged motive or&nbsp;<em>casus belli<\/em>&nbsp;was not the commission, but the supposed hypothetical&nbsp;<em>threat&nbsp;<\/em>of a massacre of civilians, dismissed by the Foreign Affairs Committee as baseless. The real interest in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.medialens.org\/2011\/three-little-words-wikileaks-libya-oil-sp-1286592871\/\">Libya<\/a>, as&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.medialens.org\/2022\/wicked-leaks-part-2-how-the-media-quarantined-evidence-on-bp-and-cancer-in-iraq\/\">Iraq<\/a>, was oil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u2018An Extraordinary Amount Of Arms\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because corporate \u2018journalism\u2019 is a propaganda machine, the message must always be clear, with no room for doubt. The public forehead is not to be branded with messages of: \u2018GOOD, but\u2026\u2019 Naturally, then, it is deemed beyond the remit of responsible journalism to ask how the smartly dressed Syrian \u2018rebels\u2019 with high-tech weapons became powerful enough to overthrow a national government supported by Russia and Iran. How did that happen? Who gave them the weapons, funded them, trained them, organised them? Economist Jeffrey Sachs of Columbia University and Sybil Fares of Sustainable Development Solutions Network&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/opinion\/us-israel-syria\">explain<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u2018Operation Timber Sycamore was a billion-dollar CIA covert program launched by Obama to overthrow Bashar al-Assad. The CIA funded, trained, and provided intelligence to radical and extreme Islamist groups. The CIA effort also involved a rat line\u201d to run weapons from Libya (attacked by NATO in 2011) to the jihadists in Syria. In 2014, Seymour Hersh&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lrb.co.uk\/the-paper\/v36\/n08\/seymour-m.-hersh\/the-red-line-and-the-rat-line\">described<\/a>&nbsp;the operation in his piece The Red Line and the Rat Line\u201d:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018A highly classified annex to the report, not made public, described a secret agreement reached in early 2012 between the Obama and Erdo\u011fan administrations. It pertained to the rat line. By the terms of the agreement, funding came from Turkey, as well as Saudi Arabia and Qatar; the CIA, with the support of MI6, was responsible for getting arms from Gaddafi\u2019s arsenals into Syria.\u201d\u2019<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Sachs and Fares continue:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u2018Soon after the launch of Timber Sycamore, in March 2013, at a joint conference by President Obama and Prime Minister Netanyahu at the White House, Obama said: With respect to Syria, the United States continues to work with allies and friends and the Syrian opposition to hasten the end of Assad\u2019s rule.\u201d\u2019<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Our search of the ProQuest newspaper database finds no mention of \u2018Timber Sycamore\u2019 in any UK newspaper in the last three months. Mentions did appear in The Pioneer, New Delhi; Haaretz in Israel; in the Sri Lanka Guardian and the Tehran Times. That simple finding gives an idea of the current state of UK press freedom. See Sachs\u2019 excellent interview&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/TuckerCarlson\/status\/1868789953443832205?t=0\">here<\/a>&nbsp;for further discussion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>WikiLeaks&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/wikileaks\/status\/1865751221434495332\">notes<\/a>&nbsp;that in a September 2016 leaked audio US Secretary of State John Kerry said of anti-Assad forces: \u2018we\u2019ve been putting an extraordinary amount of arms in\u2026 Qatar, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, huge amount of weapons coming in, huge amount of money\u2026\u2019. In June 2015, the Washington Post&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/664uNC\">reported<\/a>&nbsp;of the US:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u2018At $1 billion, Syria-related operations account for about $1 of every $15 in the CIA\u2019s overall budget\u2026 US officials said the CIA has trained and equipped nearly 10,000 fighters sent into Syria over the past several years \u2014 meaning that the agency is spending roughly $100,000 per year for every anti-Assad rebel who has gone through the program.\u2019<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2017, The New York Times&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/08\/02\/world\/middleeast\/cia-syria-rebel-arm-train-trump.html\">reported<\/a>&nbsp;that the US had been embroiled in a dirty war in Syria that constituted \u2018one of the costliest covert action programs in the history of the C.I.A\u2019, running to \u2018more than $1 billion over the life of the program\u2019. The aim was to support a vast \u2018rebel\u2019 army created and armed by the US, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Turkey to overthrow the Syrian government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is difficult to suppress so much naked \u2018intervention\u2019. Ignoring the broader context reviewed above, the Daily Mail&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-14209391\/America-helped-prepare-Syria-rebels-coup-toppled-Assad.html\">reported<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u2018US special forces warned Syrian rebel fighters to be ready\u201d weeks before Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) fighters launched the large-scale coup that toppled former President Bashar al-Assad\u2019s regime, it has emerged.\u2019<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>See Aaron Mat\u00e9&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/substack.com\/home\/post\/p-153808885\">here<\/a>&nbsp;for further discussion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Blithely ignoring the role of the West, the Observer concluded its&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/2024\/dec\/15\/the-observer-view-on-syria-we-must-reach-out-a-hand-of-friendship-to-damascus\">leading article<\/a>&nbsp;with what was presumably not an attempt at humour:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u2018But the west must not attempt to dictate events.\u2019<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The Guardian\u2019s Simon Tisdall&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/2024\/dec\/08\/bashar-al-assad-syria-middle-east\">did<\/a>&nbsp;a magnificent job of reversing the truth by pretending not to be aware of a mountain of evidence, saying of the West:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u2018It largely looked on as the most terrible suffering, mass displacement, war crimes, illegal use of chemical weapons and other horrors unfolded. Its occasional interventions \u2013 such as Donald Trump\u2019s one-off 2017 bombing of regime military facilities after a chemical weapons attack in Khan Sheikhun in Idlib \u2013 were undertaken more to ease collective consciences than to effect real change.\u2019<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Other invasions supported by the West are being casually soft-soaped by Western media in a way that would be unthinkable for Official Enemies. On December 9, Associated Press&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AP\/status\/1866216293533090116\">reported<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u2018As Israel advances on a Syrian buffer zone, it sees peril and opportunity\u2019<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Israel, then, merely \u2018advances\u2019 into \u2018a buffer zone\u2019; it\u2019s not invading, much less illegally invading. Associated Press previously&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AssalRad\/status\/1866376238044229816\">reported<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u2018Russia presses invasion to outskirts of Ukrainian capital\u2019<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>In similar vein, The New York Times&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AssalRad\/status\/1865859987379282344\">wrote<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u2018Israel Enters Demilitarized Buffer Zone In the Golan Heights\u2019<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The BBC reported that Israeli settlements in the Golan Heights \u2018are considered illegal under international law, which Israel disputes\u2019. Imagine the BBC saying: \u2018The invasion of Ukraine is considered illegal under international law, which Russia disputes.\u2019 Unthinkable, of course \u2013 why would anyone care what the Russians think?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The BBC also provided a darkly amusing&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/medialens\/status\/1866469181564039348\">map<\/a>&nbsp;of Syria reflecting its power-friendly worldview. Highlights included a completely undiscussed, preposterously named \u2018US outpost\u2019 inside Syria. Who is in there, we wondered; the US cavalry? What are they up to? Is there any oil there? There is also no mention in the BBC\u2019s annotation that the blank space marking the Golan Heights is under illegal Israeli occupation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By contrast, independent member of parliament Zarah Sultana&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/zarahsultana\/status\/1866468450438414775\">commented<\/a>&nbsp;on X:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u2018Israel is invading Syria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018While committing genocide in Gaza, settler terror in the West Bank &amp; bombing raids on Lebanon, Israeli tanks roll into Damascus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018This is a system of oppression that knows no borders \u2014 yet the UK government parrots lines about Israeli self-defence\u201d.\u2019<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Sachs is less positive than our reflexively joyous media:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u2018Most likely Syria will now succumb to continued war among the many armed protagonists, as has happened in the previous U.S.-Israeli regime-change operations.\u2019<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>That terrible outcome would be the natural assumption for anyone with any knowledge of Iraq and Libya.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The BBC\u2019s Jeremy Bowen managed to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/cp8n20z080ko\">wave&nbsp;<\/a>vaguely in the direction of the ugly truth:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u2018Colonel Gaddafi of Libya and Saddam Hussein of Iraq were removed without a ready-made replacement waiting in the wings. Ill-considered foreign intervention did much to create two catastrophes.\u2019<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018Foreign intervention\u2019? By whom? Bowen would be out of a job if he told us those \u2018catastrophes\u2019 were committed by the same people driving the latest events in Syria. Was the main problem with those \u2018interventions\u2019 that there was not \u2018a ready-made replacement waiting in the wings\u2019? Was there a problem with the idea that the US and UK had any business imposing replacements on&nbsp;<em>anyone<\/em>? Especially given their nihilistic moral track record.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The truth is that violent regime almost always has catastrophic consequences for the civilian population. However violent or corrupt a state may be, if and when it collapses, so do many of the support systems needed to keep people alive and healthy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A short BBC report&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/medialens\/status\/1866459671726620892\">discussed<\/a>&nbsp;the fate of Iraq and Libya in three sentences, none of which mentioned that the US-UK alliance was behind those disasters.
