{"id":149440,"date":"2025-05-08T08:27:24","date_gmt":"2025-05-08T15:27:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.lankaweb.com\/news\/items\/?p=149440"},"modified":"2025-05-08T08:27:24","modified_gmt":"2025-05-08T15:27:24","slug":"fr-petition-filed-to-invalidate-sri-lanka-india-mous","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lankaweb.com\/news\/items\/2025\/05\/08\/fr-petition-filed-to-invalidate-sri-lanka-india-mous\/","title":{"rendered":"FR petition filed to invalidate Sri Lanka-India MoUs"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>Courtesy Daily Mirror<\/em><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n<p>Colombo, May 8 (Daily Mirror) &#8211; A Fundamental Rights petition has been filed before the Supreme Court, seeking an order to invalidate the Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) recently signed between Sri Lanka and India.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A group of petitioners, including Dr. Gunadasa Amarasekara, filed this petition, naming Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, members of the Cabinet of Ministers, the Attorney General, and several others as respondents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Seven MoUs between India and Sri Lanka, covering several key sectors, were exchanged on April 5 at the Presidential Secretariat in the presence of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The petitioners alleged that the recently signed MoUs are contrary to the Constitution of Sri Lanka as well as international laws.<br><br>They further stated that the public has not yet been informed about the contents of these MoUs, which constitutes a violation of the people&#8217;s Constitutional rights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The petitioners claimed that the agreements undermine Sri Lanka\u2019s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and that the government&#8217;s decision to sign them without presenting them to Parliament is unlawful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The petitioners are requesting the Supreme Court to rule that their fundamental rights have been violated and to issue an interim order preventing the implementation of the said agreements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Courtesy Daily Mirror Colombo, May 8 (Daily Mirror) &#8211; A Fundamental Rights petition has been filed before the Supreme Court, seeking an order to invalidate the Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) recently signed between Sri Lanka and India.
