On the 98th anniversary of the founding of the People\u2019s Liberation Army (PLA), the Chinese Embassy in Colombo delivered more than a message of military celebration \u2014 it reaffirmed a growing truth in Sri Lanka\u2019s foreign policy: China is a friend who has stood with us \u2014 quietly, powerfully, and respectfully.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Force that Heals, not Harms<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

While some nations arm proxies and destabilize neighbors to assert control, China sends hospital ships \u2014 like the Peace Ark<\/em>, which treated over 5,000 Sri Lankans, performed surgeries, and extended the hand of healing. That is not just military diplomacy \u2014 that is humanitarian solidarity<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

India, in contrast, has left behind a bitter trail: from training Tamil militants in the 1980s to meddling in Sri Lanka\u2019s internal affairs under the guise of regional stability,\u201d often enforcing its will through covert operations, forced deals, and political interference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Respectful Partnership vs Strategic Pressure<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The PLA\u2019s modernization is not about dominance but capacity-building. As the Chinese envoy stated, China builds no alliances to threaten, targets no third country, and seeks no confrontation. It offers confidence without coercion<\/strong> \u2014 unlike India\u2019s Neighborhood First\u201d policy that often means India First, neighbors later.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sri Lanka has seen how India weaponizes trade, diplomacy, and debt \u2014 through infrastructure-airport-harbor-port deals, political manipulation, and acting as a gatekeeper to Western powers. These are not claims, but facts India cannot deny.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In contrast, China provides military training, humanitarian support, cultural solidarity and consistently defends Sri Lanka\u2019s sovereignty on international platforms like the Geneva Human Rights Council. No conditions. No lectures. Just solidarity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two Neighbors, Two Approaches<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

China and India represent two fundamentally different foreign policy models<\/strong>. One respects Sri Lanka\u2019s independence. The other seeks to influence it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where China\u2019s ambassador fosters partnership and trust, India\u2019s engagement often feels like coercion disguised as cooperation<\/strong>. This distinction is vital: Sri Lanka must choose friends based on mutual respect and reliability<\/strong>, not mere geography.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Consistent Diplomatic Ethic<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Under Ambassador Qi Zhenhong, the Chinese Embassy has deepened these time-tested ties \u2014 from humanitarian aid and technical training to respectful defense cooperation. In a region where some diplomats act like proconsuls, China\u2019s representative has behaved like a true partner<\/strong>, not a puppet master.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

History with India: Respect must be Mutual<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sri Lanka acknowledges its deep and ancient cultural, religious, and economic ties with India \u2014 bonds we continue to respect & strengthen. Sri Lanka has never taken action that threatens India\u2019s security.<\/strong> Yet, India has repeatedly undermined Sri Lanka\u2019s sovereignty \u2014 backing separatism, manipulating internal politics, and seeking dominance rather than friendship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Respect must be mutual. Friendship cannot be one-sided or coerced.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is not an attack on India, nor a blind embrace of any global power. It is a sober reflection on how Sri Lanka has been treated \u2014 and how it deserves to be treated. We value our civilizational ties with India, but friendship must never become dominance. Nor is this blind praise of China; we judge all nations by their conduct. In diplomacy, proximity is not loyalty, and distance is not distrust.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our guiding principle is simple: we stand with those who respect our sovereignty \u2014 not those who compromise it.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Critics speak of debt traps\u201d \u2014 but forget who truly dictated terms, who benefited from rushed deals, and who pressured Sri Lanka in its moments of weakness. Unlike others, China has never demanded policy in return for aid. That is the real difference.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

China\u2019s higher moral ground in Diplomacy<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unlike certain regional powers that treat Sri Lanka as a geopolitical playground<\/strong> \u2014 arming insurgents, imposing political solutions, and dictating terms \u2014 China has consistently demonstrated principled diplomacy<\/strong>. It never exploited Sri Lanka\u2019s vulnerabilities or used proximity as pressure.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While others rely on surveillance, backdoor deals, and regime manipulation, China has shown that true friendship respects sovereignty. It does not subvert it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This ethos is reflected in the actions of its present envoy and the strength of bilateral ties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sadly, Sri Lanka\u2019s political leadership has often failed to see this difference \u2014 or been too compromised to respond with equal dignity and clarity.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Shared Vision for a Peaceful Asia<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

President Xi\u2019s vision of a shared future for humanity<\/strong>, rooted in peace and cooperation, aligns with Sri Lanka\u2019s hopes for stability after decades of foreign interference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

China does not demand allegiance \u2014 it offers partnership.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In contrast, India\u2019s record is full of double standards: preaching peace while backing division, talking unity while meddling in regime changes abroad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From Zheng He to Peace Ark \u2014 A Timeless Friendship<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Centuries before modern diplomacy, Admiral Zheng He sailed peacefully to Sri Lanka. Today, the Peace Ark<\/em> carries that legacy forward. From the pilgrimages of Monk Faxian to strategic cooperation today, China has never treated Sri Lanka as a backyard \u2014 only as friend.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let <\/em><\/strong>us <\/em>choose <\/em>our Friends by <\/em>their Deeds, Not Their Distance<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s time Sri Lanka sees the difference clearly:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    China helped end terrorism. India enabled it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Let history judge not who claimed to help \u2014 but who truly did<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    As the Chinese envoy rightly said: History is like a mirror, seeing the road ahead.\u201d<\/strong>
    For Sri Lanka, that road must be walked with true friends \u2014 not false allies<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
