Author and attorney<\/strong> Jennifer Harbury describes the Silent Holocaust\u201d in Guatemala and its links to the genocide in Gaza, using any methods of barbarity necessary.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

K<\/strong>nown as the Silent Holocaust,\u201d the genocide in Guatemala is seldom mentioned in modern history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The United States, with support from Israel, backed yet another violent crusade against an indigenous population as well as against communism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Guatemalan genocide \u2014 preceded by a C.I.A.-instigated coup d\u2019\u00e9tat of the Guatemalan government in 1954 and the ensuing civil war \u2014 saw hundreds of thousands of the Mayan Indigenous peoples and alleged communists massacred or disappeared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jennifer Harbury, an attorney, author and human rights activist, witnessed the horrors of the genocidal campaign waged by the U.S.-backed Guatemalan military. Included in these horrors was the torture and disappearance of her husband, Mayan rebel leader Efra\u00edn B\u00e1maca Vel\u00e1squez (known as Everardo) by C.I.A.-backed Guatemalan military officials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Harbury joins host Chris Hedges on this episode of The Chris Hedges Report<\/em> to dissect the brutal history of the genocide as well as recount her own experiences, including several hunger strikes in Guatemala and Washington, D.C., that ultimately led to the exposure of the C.I.A.\u2019s complicity in the atrocities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
