{"id":155546,"date":"2026-04-07T15:51:42","date_gmt":"2026-04-07T22:51:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.lankaweb.com\/news\/items\/?p=155546"},"modified":"2026-04-07T15:51:42","modified_gmt":"2026-04-07T22:51:42","slug":"sri-lanka-raises-cooking-gas-prices-by-23","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lankaweb.com\/news\/items\/2026\/04\/07\/sri-lanka-raises-cooking-gas-prices-by-23\/","title":{"rendered":"Sri Lanka raises cooking gas prices by 23%"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>Courtesy The Straits Times<\/em><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n<p>COLOMBO \u2013 Sri Lanka on April&nbsp;6&nbsp;raised prices of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) by nearly a quarter, blaming higher global prices triggered by the Iran war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As well as gas, Sri Lanka also imports all of its oil and buys coal for electricity generation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Colombo has warned that a prolonged war in the Middle East could seriously undermine efforts to emerge from its economic meltdown of 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The increase in cooking gas prices on April&nbsp;6&nbsp;is&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/asia\/south-asia\/sri-lanka-raises-fuel-prices-by-25-as-war-bites?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">on top of an eight per cent hike<\/a>&nbsp;in&nbsp;March.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A private company, which accounts for about a quarter of the domestic LPG market, raised its retail price by 23 per cent to 5,700 rupees (S$23.30), up from 4,630 rupees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The state-owned Litro Gas, the main supplier of LPG used in cooking stoves, increased the price of a 12.5kg refill to 4,765 rupees, up from 3,990 rupees \u2013 an increase of 19.42 per cent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We have supplies for the entire month of April,\u201d a Litro spokesman said, adding that higher global LPG prices and shipping costs had forced the latest revision.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Courtesy The Straits Times COLOMBO \u2013 Sri Lanka on April&nbsp;6&nbsp;raised prices of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) by nearly a quarter, blaming higher global prices triggered by the Iran war.
