Built in 2013 at an estimated cost of US$209 million, with the majority financed through Chinese loans, the airport was originally designed to handle one million passengers and 50,000 tonnes of cargo annually. Unfortunately, traffic projections never materialised, and the airport became globally known as one of the world\u2019s least utilised international airports.
However, underutilisation does not necessarily mean failure. Around the world, many airports have been successfully repurposed as aviation maintenance centres, logistics hubs, industrial zones, and aerospace parks.
