{"id":157240,"date":"2026-07-11T16:30:07","date_gmt":"2026-07-11T23:30:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.lankaweb.com\/news\/items\/?p=157240"},"modified":"2026-07-11T16:30:07","modified_gmt":"2026-07-11T23:30:07","slug":"benchmarking-chinese-shipyard-productivity-a-roadmap-for-sri-lankas-marine-and-offshore-industry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lankaweb.com\/news\/items\/2026\/07\/11\/benchmarking-chinese-shipyard-productivity-a-roadmap-for-sri-lankas-marine-and-offshore-industry\/","title":{"rendered":"Benchmarking Chinese Shipyard Productivity: A Roadmap for Sri Lanka\u2019s Marine and Offshore Industry\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em><strong>Dr Sarath Obeysekera<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>For a <strong>modern Chinese shipyard<\/strong> building a merchant vessel of around <strong>1,000 tonnes of fabricated steel<\/strong>, the productivity of welders and fabricators is significantly higher than in most South Asian yards because of extensive automation, panel lines, robotic welding, and block<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fabricator (Fit-up):\u20280.8\u20131.5 tonnes per man-day<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>Welder:\u20280.5\u20131.0 tonnes per man-day (depending on weld length, welding position, and complexity)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>Combined Fabricator and Welder Team:\u20280.6\u20131.0 tonnes per direct production worker per man-day<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For a <strong>1,000-tonne hull<\/strong>, assuming an average direct labour productivity of <strong>0.8 t\/man-day<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Total direct production labour = <strong>1,250 man-days<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If the workforce consists of:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>30 fabricators<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>30 welders<br>(60 direct workers)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Then fabrication and welding of the hull steel would take approximately:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1,250 \u00f7 60 \u2248 21 working days<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This excludes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Lofting\/CAD<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Material handling<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Surface preparation and blasting<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Painting<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pipe fitting<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Outfitting<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Electrical work<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Testing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Management and quality control<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Comparison with other shipyards<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Top Chinese\/Korean yards:<\/strong> 0.8\u20131.5 t\/man-day<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Japanese yards:<\/strong> 0.7\u20131.2 t\/man-day<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Efficient Indian yards:<\/strong> 0.4\u20130.8 t\/man-day<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Typical South Asian conventional yards:<\/strong> 0.2\u20130.5 t\/man-day<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Colombo Dockyard and in offshore fabrication, we &nbsp;may have another benchmark commonly used in estimating: <strong>steelwork labour hours per tonne<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For commercial shipbuilding in China:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>15\u201325 labour hours per tonne<\/strong> for hull steel fabrication is typical.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>World-class automated yards can achieve <strong>10\u201315 labour hours per tonne<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Offshore structures and naval vessels require substantially more, often <strong>40\u2013100+ labour hours per tonne<\/strong> due to tighter tolerances and more complex welding.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These figures are suitable for preliminary estimating and benchmarking against Sri Lankan shipyard productivity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Those productivity figures are often useful when evaluating the competitiveness of a shipyard or preparing a business case.
