NVQ Level 3 (National Vocational Qualification)<\/strong> is an intermediate vocational qualification that certifies a person is competent to perform skilled work independently. In Sri Lanka, it is awarded under the National Vocational Qualifications (NVQ) Framework, which is regulated by the Tertiary and Vocational Education Commission (TVEC).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For welding<\/strong>, an NVQ Level 3 holder is expected to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \n
  • Perform welding tasks independently with limited supervision.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Read and interpret basic engineering drawings and welding symbols.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Carry out SMAW (stick), GMAW (MIG), GTAW (TIG), or FCAW welding, depending on the training.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Follow workplace safety and quality procedures.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Produce welds that meet the required standards for general fabrication and construction.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    Typical jobs include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    • Skilled Welder<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Fabricator<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Structural Steel Welder<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Maintenance Welder<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Workshop Technician<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

      Progression:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      • NVQ Level 1\u20132:<\/strong> Basic operator\/helper.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • NVQ Level 3:<\/strong> Skilled tradesperson.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • NVQ Level 4:<\/strong> Craftsman or senior technician with advanced practical skills.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • NVQ Level 5\u20136:<\/strong> Diploma level (supervisory\/technical).<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • NVQ Level 7:<\/strong> Bachelor\u2019s degree equivalent.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

        For the marine, shipbuilding, and offshore industries<\/strong>, NVQ Level 3 is generally considered the minimum qualification for employment as a skilled welder. However, for higher-paying international jobs in shipyards and offshore oil and gas projects, employers often require NVQ Level 4<\/strong> together with internationally recognized welding certifications (such as ASME, AWS, ISO, or DNV), depending on the work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
