Living in developed nations, overseas citizens gain access to advanced infrastructure, cutting-edge technology, and global networks. In an ideal scenario, they leverage these advantages to bring facilities, expertise, and investment back to their motherland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Regional neighbours offer clear examples of this in action\u2014diaspora communities actively contributing to building schools, hospitals, airports, and modern road networks in their homelands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unfortunately, Sri Lanka\u2019s experience often tells a different story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where the Focus Lies<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instead of channelling knowledge and capital into nation-building, a significant portion of resources continues to fund past divisions and prolong disharmony. At the same time, opportunistic local actors exploit these funds for personal gain, prioritising financial handouts over genuine national progress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ironically, the rare moment of unity among the diaspora occurs on the cricket field. When Sri Lanka plays against their adopted home nation, the stadium comes alive\u2014flags wave, baila hits like “Surangani”<\/em> resound, and the passion is undeniable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Imagine if even a fraction of that shared energy and spirit were redirected toward tangible development back home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Looking Ahead, Not Behind<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Constantly unearthing past conflicts achieves little. As the famous adage goes, “History is a set of lies agreed upon.”<\/em> Lingering in the past will not build a future for the next generation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
