At most it is mud governance – governance of the nation using mud slinging tactics. It is not sustainable. It is to distance the UPFA. By distancing the UPFA, the UNP led government will be unable to pass promised Constitutional amendments. UNP was never keen on any of the constitutional amendments promised. Now they are looking for excuses not to do them. The best excuse is the non-co-operation of the UPFA. It can be achieved by antagonising the UPFA through hate tactics which are underway.

UPFA has the good opportunity to bring its own motions to parliament to abolish executive presidency altogether. It will have two thirds majority support and it will expose the UNP’s dishonesty. While Chandrika wants her UK educated son to win the election and become Prime Minister, UNP is opposed to it. UNP and Chandrika are also fighting over the credit for the election win. This is crucial for the upcoming General Election. Appointment of ministry secretaries displays this growing rift that can tear apart the fragile coalition. While most ministers are from the UNP, the President keeps a firm hand of all ministries by appointing ministry secretaries loyal to Chandrika.

March 2, 2015

March 2, 2015 is an important day. It marks 200 years of Sri Lanka losing its independence for the first time in history. Never did the island nation lose its independence completely in the past except in 1815. There is a bigger rift within the government over this. UNP wants to let it pass without a noise but the few nationalists within the government want people to remember this unfortunate event so that they learn a lesson from it.

UNP fears that if reminded, it will be electorally disadvantageous for it.

It is the task of nationalists in the UPFA to make a huge cry about the event and commemorate the unfortunate event on a national scale drawing parallels with the current state of the nation.

In 1810 King Rajasingha defeated British troops and stopped further attacks on the Kandyan Kingdom. It didn’t take long for the people to realize the change they made (which was essential) was not that rosy. In 1818 people rebelled against the colonials and lost. It was a costly affair.
