Is it President MS, Madam Chandrika, Opposition Leader Nimal Siripala de Silva or former President Mahinda Rajapakse?

So far the President MS has failed to demonstrate that he is an Executive Presidential material. He has already been sidelined and not articulating the basics of a leader. He himself is unsure whether he is entitled to ” call the shots”. He is a follower than a Leader.

The question is whether the Leader of the SLFP, President MS is dancing to the tune of Madam Chandrika, Prime Minister RW or former President Mahinda Rajapakse. It is clear that Madam Chandrika is quite a happy person after taking revenge from the former President Mahinda Rajapkse. Everything else is now secondary to her.

In reality the Prime Minister Mr Ranil Wickremasinghe is behaving like the Executive President taking maximum advantage for the UNP from the destructive conflicts appearing in the SLFP. The unlimited “Ostensible Presidential Powers” exercised by the Prime Minister is benefitting the UNP, Tamil and Muslim political parties.

The current Prime Minister has not faced a vote of confidence on the floor of the House as required by the Constitution. Yet he is threatening to dissolve the Parliament if the no confidence motion against the a Minister is succeeded. It is clear that the Prime Minister has become the “de-facto” Executive President after silencing the President MS.

In essence, the SLFP is inadvertently empowering the UNP to remain in power and win the General Election. Both the President MS and Madam Chandrika have got their tongues in cheek being unable to challenge the high handed acts of the behaviour of the Prime Minister Mr Ranil Wickremasinghe. The details of the electoral pact between MS. CBK and RW still remain a mystery and not available in public domain. Therefore, it is a reasonable presumption that the trio’s long term objective will be to empower the UNP at the expense of the SLFP.

Madam Chandrika’s father left UNP and formed SLFP . Later he formed Mahajana Eksath Peramua with Mr Philip Gunawardene, P H William De Silva with the support of respected Buddhist Monks such as Bambarande Siri Seevali Thero. Should Madam Chandrika undo what her father pioneered?

Before it is too late, will Madam Chandrika realize the foolishness of the current political marriage and embark on the journey to bring back the freedom to the people of Sri Lanka, particularly to the majority Sinhalese, free from international intervention?

If the current trend continues, the outcome of a future general election likely to favour the UNP. The way RW is behaving as an Executive President at the moment, is a clear indication of his future strategies if elected as the First Executive Prime Minister. The UNP at present is tarnishing the image of the former government and it is regrettable that the SLFP will be guilty of cannibalisation.

The SLFP should embrace an action plan immediately to:

bring a no confidence motion against the current Prime Minister;

Delay changes to the Executive Presidential powers and changes to the Constitution until a  comprehensive debate and review is undertaken. Delaying the changes to the powers of the President will appease the President himself;

If the choice is to face the General Election with Mr Nimal Siripala de Silva as Prime Ministerial candidate, the probability of success will be low. If former President Mahinda Rajapakse is nominated as the Prime Ministerial candidate, with the current Opposition leader as Deputy PM, the value of “stock in trade ” of the SLFP will be enhanced, the political and economic stability for Sri Lanka will be continued.

If SLFP is determined to marginalise the former President Mahinda Rajapakse, the emergence of a third force cannot be avoided. In such a situation, the SLFP will be forced to recognize the third force after the General Election to form at least a minority government.

By M D P DISSANAYAKE Structurally it appears that the President Maithreepala Sirisena is the Leader of the SLFP, at least on paper. But who is maneuvering the steering wheel of the SLFP?
