Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said yesterday that he does not want to form a United National Party (UNP) government at the next general election and that he desires for the entire Parliament to be a government.<\/p>\n

He said his desire is for the entire Parliament to be one government. “What we have done is to work together with all parties. In a way this is a challenge.<\/p>\n

In a way it is an opportunity,” the UNP leader said at an event held at Royal College, Colombo.<\/p>\n

“People ask me ‘are you going to form a UNP government? Are you going to form a UNP-SLFP government? Are you going to form an anti-Mahinda government?’ And my answer to all that is, no. I want the whole Parliament to be a government,” he said.<\/p>\n

Wickramasinghe\u00a0said he believes that all political parties have a duty by the people and that they are also responsible for the present political system, which allowed for various wrongdoings and malpractices.<\/p>\n

“We made it a form of tribal warfare. And if we didn’t make the change, the tribal warfare would have devoured us,” he said.<\/p>\n

He stated that the country\u2019s people lost a lot during the war and lost another 5 years after it. Now the time has come to make up for what we lost, to ensure that in the next five years we put the country right.\u201d<\/p>\n

He said to provide Sri Lanka’s younger generation with a chance to build a life anew, the mindset of the people has to change.<\/p>\n

“We have to think can we for five years being in different parties put the country first, work something out and at the end of the five years go back and contest and let the one who has the majority form the government and others go to the opposition?” he said.<\/p>\n

The Parliament is expected to be dissolved on April 23 and a general election be held as promised in the 100 Days\u2019 Program of the new government led by President Maithripala Sirisena.<\/p>\n

In the run-up to the Presidential Election and after, the UNP leader had stated that the next general election will pave the way for a national government, comprising members of both the main political parties, the United National Party and Sri Lanka Freedom Party.<\/p>\n

In the mean time \u00a0the\u00a0Opposition Leader Nimal Siripala de Silva told the Daily News during a recent interview \u00a0that the concept of a National Government will come to play if there is no clear majority for the SLFP or for the UNP. At that time, that is a matter to be negotiated on a common program which should be acceptable for both parties. That is yet to be decided.<\/p>\n

The next election would be fought by the two main political parties in Sri Lanka which are the SLFP and the UNP. Therefore, it all depends on the outcome. If the SLFP gets a clear majority, there is no need for a National Government. If the UNP gets a clear majority, there is no need for a National Government. But my view is that with the ground realities as at the moment, the SLFP and the UPFA can win the upcoming general election comfortably and we can form a stable government of our own.<\/p>\n
