{"id":41815,"date":"2015-02-25T22:11:51","date_gmt":"2015-02-26T04:11:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.lankaweb.com\/news\/items\/?p=41815"},"modified":"2015-02-25T12:56:51","modified_gmt":"2015-02-25T19:56:51","slug":"australia-secured-asylum-deal-by-staying-silent-on-rights-abuses-sri-lanka-pm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lankaweb.com\/news\/items\/2015\/02\/25\/australia-secured-asylum-deal-by-staying-silent-on-rights-abuses-sri-lanka-pm\/","title":{"rendered":"Australia secured asylum deal by staying &#8216;silent&#8217; on rights abuses: Sri Lanka PM"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>Courtesy \u00a0The\u00a0Guardian<\/em><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Prime minister Ranil Wickremesinghe says former president agreed to help stop boats carrying asylum seekers if Australian government kept quiet\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Ranil Wickremesinghe\u00a0Ranil Wickremesinghe said Australian prime minister Tony Abbott\u2019s close relationship with former president Mahinda Rajapaksa was \u2018a mystery\u2019 to Sri Lankans.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Australia stayed silent on alleged human rights abuses in Sri Lanka in exchange for cooperation in cracking down on people-smuggling, Colombo\u2019s new prime minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>Wickremesinghe said former president Mahinda Rajapaksa had agreed to help stop boats carrying asylum seekers leaving for Australia if Canberra kept quiet about alleged abuses committed by the previous regime.<\/p>\n<p>In an interview with the Australian newspaper, Wickremesinghe said Australian prime minister Tony Abbott\u2019s close relationship with Rajapaksa, who was voted out of power last month, was a mystery\u201d to Sri Lankans.<\/p>\n<p>Colombo\u2019s new premier also said that people connected to the previous government\u201d had taken part in people-smuggling operations.<\/p>\n<p>It was being done by people with Rajapaksa connections, but once this deal was done between Australia and the Rajapaksa government, where you looked the other way [on human rights abuses], then the secretary of defence got the navy to patrol,\u201d he told the broadsheet.<\/p>\n<p>You could not have got anyone out of this country without someone in the security system looking the other way, the police or the navy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The arrival of asylum seekers by boat is a sensitive political issue in Australia, which in 2013 started sending those picked up on boats to offshore camps on Papua New Guinea\u2019s Manus Island and Nauru.<\/p>\n<p>Most asylum-seeker boats that have made the precarious journey to Australia came from Indonesia, but 120 left from Sri Lanka in 2012 for what can be a voyage of up to three weeks.<\/p>\n<p>Wickremesinghe said he was not against the Australian government, but urged them to learn from their experiences.<\/p>\n<p>Advertisement<\/p>\n<p>Some other countries must also, that fully backed the Rajapaksa regime,\u201d he told the newspaper. When human rights were being trampled, and democracy was at bay, these countries were silent.
