{"id":42466,"date":"2015-03-19T12:46:46","date_gmt":"2015-03-19T19:46:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.lankaweb.com\/news\/items\/?p=42466"},"modified":"2015-03-19T12:47:30","modified_gmt":"2015-03-19T19:47:30","slug":"national-anthem-in-two-languages","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lankaweb.com\/news\/items\/2015\/03\/19\/national-anthem-in-two-languages\/","title":{"rendered":"National Anthem in Two languages"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>Laya Alles\u00a0Montreal, Canada<\/em><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Allowing the singing of the National Anthem in the two languages is a good move towards reconciliation of the ethnic groups in Sri Lanka.<\/p>\n<p>In Montreal, Canada, a concerted effort was made in the 1980s during the height of the crisis to bring together the fractured Sri Lankan community, albeit a very small one in Montreal.<\/p>\n<p>One of the steps taken was to sing the national anthem both in Sinhala and Tamil. There were members from both communities who flocked together to make it happen.<\/p>\n<p>Since then, at all events we have sung the national anthem in both languages.<\/p>\n<p>We have a version that has both Sinhala and Tamils versus. This tactic allowed us to keep the same time as that would have been spent if the anthem was sung only in one language.<\/p>\n<p>There were comments related to the constitutionality of this tactic.
