Health Minister Dr. Rajitha Senaratne alleged yesterday that a respondent involved in the controversial Avant \u2013 Garde case had offered him a bribe of Rs. 40 million to remain silent on the issue for just two weeks and that another person had offered him a bribe of Rs. 300 million.<\/p>\n
Speaking at the weekly Cabinet media briefing at the Information Department, Dr. Senaratne said bribe was offered by a venture that earned Rs. 450 million a month.<\/p>\n
This is the type of inducement offered to us by various unscrupulous elements to catch us. But we have never succumbed to them. Several of my friends told me I was the only person who did not fall for these carrots. If I had accepted, I could have lived in super luxury in the rest of my life. Meanwhile Avant Garde Chairman Nissanka Senadhipathi said today Minister Rajitha Senaratne should complain to the Bribery Commission according to the proper procedure without making allegations to the media. He denied having offered any bribes to the minister and said if it was so the minister would not have hesitated to complain to the appropriate authorities. Dr. Senaratne is a public servant and a cabinet minister but he is lying without any shame. I am asking him to go to the Bribery Commission without making baseless allegations against me in public. Otherwise I will send him a letter of demand. Isn\u2019t there a law in this country? I will meet him at the Bribery Commission if he goes there,\u201d Mr. Senadhipathi said. He said the Health Minister had had a record of making erroneous statements to the media in the recent past and this instance was no different.
