{"id":51375,"date":"2016-01-23T16:07:59","date_gmt":"2016-01-23T23:07:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.lankaweb.com\/news\/items\/?p=51375"},"modified":"2016-01-23T16:07:59","modified_gmt":"2016-01-23T23:07:59","slug":"20-things-you-need-to-know-about-colombos-lotus-tower","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lankaweb.com\/news\/items\/2016\/01\/23\/20-things-you-need-to-know-about-colombos-lotus-tower\/","title":{"rendered":"20 Things You Need To Know About Colombo\u2019s Lotus Tower"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em><a class=\"author-name\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/roar.lk\/author\/gazala\/\">Gazala Anver<\/a>\u00a0Courtesy roar.lk<\/em><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>On a clear day, it\u2019s difficult to miss the yet to be completed Lotus Tower dominating Colombo\u2019s skyline.<\/p>\n<p>Although the project has been mired in controversy (and <strong>not<\/strong> the Freudian sort), and perhaps because of it, most people seem <strong>unsure<\/strong> as to what purpose the Tower will serve.<\/p>\n<p>We all know the basics of how the Lotus Tower will be the tallest tower in South Asia \u2013 but here\u2019s a list of things about the Lotus Tower which you probably <strong>didn&#8217;t <\/strong>know, but should know (because let\u2019s face it, whether you like it or <strong>not,<\/strong> it\u2019s definitely here to stay).<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Currently, <strong>292.2<\/strong> metres (<strong>958<\/strong> feet) of the Lotus Tower, up to the concrete mast, has been completed.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The metal mast and the petals are yet to be finished.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li>The entire project is to be completed by October <strong>2017 <\/strong>and the tower will be declared open towards the end of <strong>2017.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Once completed, and with the lightning tower in place, the tower will stand at a total of <strong>350 <\/strong>metres.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-51376\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lankaweb.com\/news\/items\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Lotus-Tower-Comparison.jpg\" alt=\"Lotus-Tower-Comparison\" width=\"650\" height=\"458\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lankaweb.com\/news\/items\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Lotus-Tower-Comparison.jpg 650w, https:\/\/www.lankaweb.com\/news\/items\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Lotus-Tower-Comparison-300x211.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Colombo\u2019s Lotus Tower in comparison to some other famous tall buildings in the world<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li>The Lotus Tower, on completion, will act as a transmission tower for TV and radio.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The Telecom Regulatory Commission (TRC) informed\u00a0<em>Roar\u00a0<\/em>that the rationale behind the Lotus Tower acting as a single transmission hub\u00a0is to equalise the quality of transmission and ensure that all consumers have equal access to quality broadcast.<\/p>\n<p>This will also ensure that the operations cost of digital transmissions by the current service providers will reduce.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"5\">\n<li>Sri Lanka Telecom (SLT) will act as the independent operator, taking over the responsibility to transmit.<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>first <\/strong>and <strong>second <\/strong>floors of the Tower House, at approximately <strong>215<\/strong> metres and <strong>219.8<\/strong> metres (<strong>705<\/strong> and <strong>721<\/strong> feet), are for TV and radio transmissions respectively.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-51377\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lankaweb.com\/news\/items\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Lotus-Tower2.jpg\" alt=\"Lotus-Tower2\" width=\"650\" height=\"432\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lankaweb.com\/news\/items\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Lotus-Tower2.jpg 650w, https:\/\/www.lankaweb.com\/news\/items\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Lotus-Tower2-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Mid 2014 saw the base being laid out. Image Credit: <a href=\"http:\/\/skyscrapercity.com\">skyscrapercity.com<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<ol start=\"7\">\n<li>The Lotus Tower, however, <strong>isn&#8217;t<\/strong> solely for transmissions.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>It will be a multifunctional building.<\/p>\n<p>Its <strong>three<\/strong> storied tower base will house various shopping centres (mostly high end), food courts, and possibly even a walk-through museum.<\/p>\n<p>The tower itself will house banquet halls and an observation deck.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"8\">\n<li>According to the TRC, the cost of the tower is covered by a loan from the Export-Import Bank of China.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>This loan will be paid back with the revenue earned from renting out space.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"9\">\n<li>There will be <strong>two <\/strong>banquet halls which will accommodate <strong>450 <\/strong>people each.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>They will be on the <strong>third<\/strong> and <strong>fourth <\/strong>floors of the Tower House at a height of <strong>224.6<\/strong> metres and<strong> 224.6<\/strong> metres (<strong>721<\/strong> and <strong>737 <\/strong>feet).<\/p>\n<ol start=\"10\">\n<li>At <strong>234.2<\/strong> metres (<strong>768<\/strong> feet), there will be a restaurant with a revolving floor for fine dining.<\/li>\n<li>There will also be suites for state guests on the <strong>seventh<\/strong> floor, at<strong> 244<\/strong> metres (<strong>784<\/strong> feet).<\/li>\n<li>The TRC estimates that by August this year, the \u2018petals\u2019 of the tower will be in place.<\/li>\n<li>The framework of the petals will be in steel, while the petals will be made of glass.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The petals will be illuminated with LED lights of changeable colours.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-51378\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lankaweb.com\/news\/items\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Lotus-Tower3.jpg\" alt=\"Lotus-Tower3\" width=\"650\" height=\"432\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lankaweb.com\/news\/items\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Lotus-Tower3.jpg 650w, https:\/\/www.lankaweb.com\/news\/items\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Lotus-Tower3-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Once complete The Lotus Tower will dominate the Colombo skyline.<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol start=\"14\">\n<li>During festivities (like Christmas, Avurudu and Eid), the tower will have appropriate decoration displays.<\/li>\n<li>The TRC also has plans of building an interactive app to improve visitor experience to the tower.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>This app will enable users to, for instance, check the availability of seats for a movie and make immediate bookings, or remotely reserve seats at a restaurant.<\/p>\n<p>The app will keep the visitor updated about events and attractions taking place at the tower.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"16\">\n<li>An entrance ticket will be required to enter the Lotus Tower.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Concessions may be granted to school children and families.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"17\">\n<li>The outdoor viewing deck, or the observation deck, will be on the <strong>eighth<\/strong> floor of the Tower House at a height of <strong>248.2 <\/strong>metres (<strong>814<\/strong> feet).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>There will also be viewing telescopes.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"18\">\n<li>There will be <strong>eight<\/strong> elevators in the Tower.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Three <\/strong>elevators in the tower will be high speed elevators, <strong>two<\/strong> will travel at a medium pace, while the <strong>three <\/strong>slower elevators will be mostly for service usage.<\/p>\n<p>With the high speed elevators, it will be possible to reach the observation deck from the tower base in<strong> less<\/strong> than a minute.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"19\">\n<li>While the petals will be illuminated with LED lights, the trunk will be illuminated using flood lights.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>This will mean that the tower will be seen even at night, from a considerable distance.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"20\">\n<li>There are plans for a Phase II, which will be built in the same locality as the Lotus Tower.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>It will house \u00a0underground parking for <strong>2,000<\/strong> vehicles (and will also include parking for daily commuters), a shopping arcade (to cater to all income groups), gyms, swimming facilities, and theatres.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-51379\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lankaweb.com\/news\/items\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Lotus-Tower4.jpg\" alt=\"Lotus-Tower4\" width=\"650\" height=\"366\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lankaweb.com\/news\/items\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Lotus-Tower4.jpg 650w, https:\/\/www.lankaweb.com\/news\/items\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Lotus-Tower4-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Lotus Tower, a projected image of what it should look like when finished.
