Programmes on newspaper Headlines, Articles and Editorials televised daily in the mornings have become extremely popular among the people of this country and in almost all the houses these programmes have become a morning breakfast treat. This programme started by Bandula Padmakumara, the former Chief Executive of the Daily News through Swarnawahini has been embraced by all the TV channels and the young journalist Chatura Alwis of the Derana TV channel has superseded all the other programme presenters and this programme has become a real treat to become impartially enlightened about what is happening in the country. Chatura in his Derana Aruna programme and C.A.Chandraprema in the political column of Sunday Island are performing a great service to enlighten the masses on political and socio economic matters and they should be commended for this dedicated service and Sri Lanka need many more sincere journalists of their caliber.<\/h3>\n

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe speaking in Parliament yesterday has lashed out at the media, accusing Chatura and Keerthi Warnakulasuriya of the Divaina of promoting racism and he has used words such as Gemba\u201d and Reeri Yaka\u201d to accuse them. He has said that Chathura is like a Reeri Yaka. We do not know whether Mr. Wickremasighe really knows what a Reeri Yaka is?<\/p>\n

For his enlightenment given below is the gist of what Reeri Yaka\u201d actually is so that he will refrain from uttering nonsense like this thinking that he is omniscient.<\/p>\n

Reeri Yakka<\/strong> is a demon<\/a> in Sinhalese<\/a> folklore. It is believed to be the most cruel and powerful demon of all. Although Reeri Yaka has the body of a human, his head is that of a monkey. His skin is fiery red in colour, and he rides a red bull. It is believed that he can afflict all kinds of illnesses on humans, but hemorrhages<\/a> and blood diseases are especially attributed to him.<\/p>\n

When a man is on his deathbed, Reeri Yakaa is believed to be present at his side. On such occasions, he shows himself as an apparition bearing the appearance of a pygmy<\/a>. He stands by the dying man holding a cock<\/a> in one hand and a club in the other, and the corpse of a man in his mouth. This apparition is said to be only one span<\/a> and six inches in height. When Reeri Yaka assumes this form, he is known as “Maru Avatar”. There are 18 other apparitions or avatars that Reeri Yaka can assume.<\/p>\n

We do not know whether Mr. Wickremsinghe, failing for a period of over one year now to fulfill the promises he made to the people similar to his earlier promises of gold chains to the youth and denim trousers to the farmers is having nightmares of Chatura in the form of a Reeriyaka? But most of the people adore him as one of the unbiased guiding journalists.<\/p>\n

This is not the first time, Mr. Wickremasinghe talking much about media freedom and journalistic ethics has threatened the journalists. Earlier on one occasion Mr. Wickremasinghe accusing the journalists similar to yesterday threatened to summon them to Parliament and imprison them.<\/p>\n

He has blamed the journalists for giving undue publicity to the murder of the Emblipitiya youth which lorphaned a small innocent child and widowed a pregnant mother without anyone to look after\u00a0\u00a0 to the Police brutality. If the journalists did not take up this incident and gave due publicity to it no one would have come forward against the Police high handedness and the incident would have been hushed up by the Police as they attempted to hush up the thuggery of MP Hirunika. It was also due to the agitations carried out by the journalists this MP was nominally arrested only after lapse of 21 days and hitherto unheard form of a bail was given to her. The ASP, OIC and the other Police officers amounting to 21 persons still remain unarrested despite it has been established that all of them were involved in this murder incident. Is this the execution of the Law and Order equally to everyone professed by Mr. Wickremasinghe?<\/p>\n

It is appreciablw that he joint Opposition has condemned the Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe\u2019s speech as a veiled threat to media. They have also condemned the use of names of animals to describe journalistsand pointed out tjat his speech is an indirect threat to media. They have also condemned Mr. Wickremasingh saying that he is asking the media to toe the government line or face the consequences.
