{"id":54539,"date":"2016-05-10T14:48:07","date_gmt":"2016-05-10T21:48:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.lankaweb.com\/news\/items\/?p=54539"},"modified":"2016-05-10T14:48:07","modified_gmt":"2016-05-10T21:48:07","slug":"what-i-think-about-ragging","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lankaweb.com\/news\/items\/2016\/05\/10\/what-i-think-about-ragging\/","title":{"rendered":"WHAT I THINK ABOUT RAGGING \u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026.."},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>Dr Sarath Obeysekera<\/em><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Recent news item about ragging a fresher in a university drew my attention &gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;<\/p>\n<p>It is a pity that incumbent government ceased the military training ( hitherto called leadership training) of youngsters who are selected to the university .<\/p>\n<p>This training would have made them more confident and foster courage to fight back if and when they are subjected to inhuman ragging .<\/p>\n<p>I remember my younger brother who had martial art training ,has beaten\u00a0 the hell out of some seniors who were trying rag them .They got so scared and never tried to rag him ever again<\/p>\n<p>In place of military training state should train all youngsters in martial art\u00a0 so that when they enter the university they can fight back the seniors .<\/p>\n<p>In Chinese and Buddhist traditions even monks are given martial art training to develop concentration and endurance<\/p>\n<p>I had education in a foreign country where ragging is never heard of ,and now I interview many young engineers\u00a0 in my field who have studied in local institutions .I\u00a0 note that they most of them\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0( there are very good ones ) are not so forward thinking and energetic ,and with less fighting spirit ,most probably due to the trauma\u00a0 they undergo during their infant \u2013stage in the University ??<\/p>\n<p>How nice it could be if the seniors get together and have party, welcome the fresher\u2019s \u00a0and give them confidence that they are welcome ?
