The several thousand Tamil civilians\u00a0being placed in jeopardy by the LTTE as the end game draws\u00a0to a close\u00a0shows the LTTE\u2019s persistent and callous disregard for\u00a0its loyal supporting cast of\u00a0civilians\u00a0drawn into\u00a0the separatist Eelam cause.<\/p>\n

Pressured by the LTTE\u2019s supporting diaspora, legislators and\u00a0diplomats in countries like the US, Canada, UK and Australia where there are sizeable Sri Lankan Tamil populations, are calling on Sri Lanka\u2019s government for a Ceasefire,\u00a0without\u00a0independently researching and\u00a0familiarizing themselves with\u00a0the LTTE\u2019s operational strategies,which show clearly that\u00a0to the\u00a0LTTE, which\u00a0has no\u00a0concern whatever for the\u00a0people under\u00a0its control, other than for how\u00a0innocents lured into LTTE service\u00a0could be used in order for the Tigers themselves to survive,\u00a0a ceasefire or truce is only a means to\u00a0survive for future rounds of\u00a0war.<\/p>\n

These internationals\u00a0must surely\u00a0know that they too are\u00a0being used\u00a0by the terror outfit as pawns,\u00a0to assist the group during\u00a0its “human shield” strategy.\u00a0 Thus, the\u00a0“human shield” necessitates international groups to reassess their\u00a0position\u00a0as it becomes clearer that\u00a0they must develop\u00a0more nuanced strategies for supporting civilians\u00a0while\u00a0alienating the terror group.<\/p>\n

The LTTE\u2019s hope is\u00a0that “intervention”\u00a0in the guise of saving\u00a0the civilians will somehow come to pass.\u00a0\u00a0Whatever precautions the SriLanka Army takes to protect the remaining civilians, the final confrontation would doubtless be a\u00a0harsh one, and would be the point at which the world would have to take\u00a0the firm stand\u00a0against terrorism\u2019s ruses and support the Sri Lanka government.\u00a0The “human shield” consideration should not supercede the\u00a0routing of\u00a0the terror group at this final stage, for it would leave a terrible example of the world\u2019s incompetence, and\u00a0lead to\u00a0more widespread use of\u00a0this terror strategy.<\/p>\n

If the LTTE is allowed to succeed in using the\u00a0“human shield” in Sri Lanka, this\u00a0will fast become the\u00a0newest ploy\u00a0used\u00a0in copycat style by intransigent terror groups the world over.\u00a0Sri Lanka with its long conflict and LTTE terrorist\u00a0dimension, has become the laboratory and leader for the world\u2019s terror outfits\u00a0today, especially in the use of suicide tactics. In this scenario, it is critical that the world gets the Sri Lankan\u00a0experiment to yield the right and desired results.\u00a0 The dilemma for all concerned now,\u00a0is how to deal with\u00a0the inevitable killings as the army squeezes the “human shield” into the No-Fire Zone\u00a0through\u00a0the finals\u00a0days of\u00a0battle.\u00a0The military has\u00a0stated that it has an assured strategy for rescuing the civilians still left in the No-Fire Zone.<\/p>\n

\u00a0As always, prevention is better than cure, so the real answer\u00a0to terrorism is\u00a0to nip\u00a0things in the bud so that\u00a0terror groups\u00a0never\u00a0are given\u00a0the chance to start up and flourish the way the LTTE had been enabled. Sri Lanka\u2019s current regime is\u00a0the first democratic government of the modern world forced\u00a0to face the predicament of the terrorist “human shield”, and deserves\u00a0special\u00a0support from the international community of Human Rights organizations, Media and the Diplomatic communities during these excruciatingly difficult\u00a0final days of confrontation between the military and the terrorists.<\/p>\n

The bravery of Sri Lanka\u2019s soldiers who\u00a0gave their lives for the country and for their\u00a0peoples\u00a0will forever be etched in Lanka\u2019s history, and\u00a0as an example of a terrorist group acknowledged as the world\u2019s most ruthless, being\u00a0routed.\u00a0\u00a0Sri Lanka\u2019s history will record the excessive price in men and treasure paid\u00a0by the nation for having kept the LTTE\u00a0in business\u00a0for so long, especially through a foolish Ceasefire Agreement that\u00a0yielded territory and gave extended life to the LTTE.<\/p>\n
