Danuna is the son in law of Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka, UNP MP. Central Bank security must be provided by the police or the army, not a private security firm. This raises doubts as to their intention.

Are they trying to burn or otherwise get rid of evidence implicating the Mahendrans of the bond fraud? Very much possible. They can also intimidate or even kill whistle-blowers. Further, they can restrict access to investigators appointed by the President. There is evidence of Fonseka misusing army deserters and retirees in his private militia as happened on January 27, 2010. Most personnel in Danuna’s security firm are from the army.

This is a very worrying development and the President must intervene to stop it. Sadly, the government that cheated elections with deliberate false promises of good governance has turned the country into a lawless republic. Former defence secretary, at least four former navy commanders, the former army commander, the former air force commander, the former chief of defence staff and a host of intelligence officers have been either remanded or harassed by various politicised (according to the President himself) investigative agencies. However, the same government supresses the COPE report into the central bank bond fraud – the biggest quantified act of corruption in Lankan history. Mahendrans must be investigated by the Financial Crimes Investigation Division (FCID). It seems they have escaped country.

New tax increases aim to raise an additional 1.80 billion rupees whereas recent car permits to ministers and MPs costed 1.18 billion rupees. If not for the wastage, the government would only need 0.62 billion rupees, which could have been collected without draconian taxes. The Chief Opposition Whip who unfortunately was instrumental in bringing to power this government pointed it out in parliament elaborately. He’s not the only one misled.

As a result of gross, open and shameless violation of law and order, people lose trust in the President, the Cabinet, the Parliament and the system itself. It is a very dangerous development. Strangely, ‘investigative journalism’ takes a break during these interesting times. Their timing cannot be worse. Do they all have a finger in the pie, people wonder. Surely, the Central Bank bond fraud is so astronomical, there is enough to go around and more to spare.

Dilrook Kannangara Danuna Tillakaratne’s security firm has been awarded the contract to provide security to all Central Bank buildings by none less than the Finance Minister by a letter sent recently.
