{"id":61742,"date":"2016-12-23T05:34:08","date_gmt":"2016-12-23T12:34:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.lankaweb.com\/news\/items\/?p=61742"},"modified":"2016-12-23T05:34:29","modified_gmt":"2016-12-23T12:34:29","slug":"no-other-port-can-be-built-from-oluvil-to-galle-jhu-hambantota-harbour-deal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lankaweb.com\/news\/items\/2016\/12\/23\/no-other-port-can-be-built-from-oluvil-to-galle-jhu-hambantota-harbour-deal\/","title":{"rendered":"No other port can be built from Oluvil to Galle \u2013 JHU  Hambantota harbour deal"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em><span class=\"article_date\">by Zacki Jabbar\u00a0Courtesy The Island<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span class=\"article_date\">December 22, 2016, 10:17 pm<\/span><br \/>\nThe Jathika Hela Urumaya yesterday called on the government to clarify if the agreement between the Sri Lanka Ports Authority and China Merchant Holdings prohibited any other ports being built along the belt stretching from Oluvil to Galle.<\/p>\n<p>Jathika Hela Urumaya Western Provincial Council member Nishantha Sri Warnasinghe, addressing a press conference in Colombo, said that the 99-year lease agreement reached with China Merchant Holdings was shrouded in secrecy, with terms of the agreement not made public.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.island.lk\/modules\/modPublication\/article_title_images\/1576357609DI-P01-23-12-(R)-pdc--FINAL_Layout-1-11.jpg\" alt=\"article_image\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are told that the accord prohibits any local or foreign company from building a port along the stretch of sea from Oluvil to Galle. It behoves the authorities to clarify this issue,&#8221; he noted, alleging that a USD-100 million commission had changed hands.<\/p>\n<p>Warnasinghe also demanded an explanation on conflicting reports emanating from the government over the number of acres to be released to a Chinese company to build the proposed Hambantota Industrial Zone (HIZ) with figures ranging from 1,500 acres to 15,000 acres being mentioned.<\/p>\n<p>Pointing out that the Bombay Industrial Zone in a huge country such as India, was only 7,000 acres in extent, he queried how the HIZ could extend upto 15,000 acres.<\/p>\n<p>All the 14 Industrial Zones in Sri Lanka covered only a total of 3,000 acres , the JHU member added.<\/p>\n<p>Warnasinghe said that good governance could not be confined to only politics. &#8220;One of the reasons for the people to have sent the Rajapaksa&#8217;s home was mega corruption.
