Russia has intelligence from “trusted sources” that chemical weapons provocations are currently being prepared in more regions in Syria, including Damascus, Russian President Vladimir Putin said after talks with Italian counterpart Sergio Mattarella Tuesday.<\/p>\n

“We have information from\u00a0various sources that such provocations\u00a0\u2014 and I cannot call them anything else\u00a0\u2014 are being prepared in\u00a0other regions of\u00a0Syria, including in\u00a0the southern suburbs of\u00a0Damascus, where they intend to\u00a0plant some substance and blame the official Syrian authorities for\u00a0its use,” Putin told a briefing.<\/p>\n

Russian President Putin announced that Russia will officially turn to\u00a0the UN in\u00a0the Hague for\u00a0an investigation of\u00a0the chemical weapons’ use in\u00a0Idlib.<\/p>\n

“All incidents reminiscent of\u00a0the ‘chemical attacks’ that took place in\u00a0Idlib must be thoroughly investigated,” Putin said.<\/p>\n

Putin pointed out\u00a0that the latest US missile strikes in\u00a0Syria bring to\u00a0mind the United States’ UN Security Council address in\u00a02003 that led to\u00a0the invasion of\u00a0Iraq.<\/p>\n

“We discussed the situation with\u00a0President [ of\u00a0Italy Sergio Mattarella] and I told him that these events strongly resemble the events of\u00a02003,” Putin said at\u00a0a briefing, outlining the prelude to\u00a0the US intervention in\u00a0Iraq.<\/p>\n

On Thursday night, the United States launched 59 Tomahawk cruise missiles at\u00a0the military airfield in\u00a0Ash Sha’irat. US President Donald Trump said that the attack was a response to\u00a0the alleged chemical weapon use in\u00a0Syria’s Idlib province on\u00a0Tuesday, which resulted in\u00a0the death of\u00a0over 80 people.<\/p>\n

Following Putin’s presser, Russian General Staff released a statement announcing that it has information of\u00a0militants bringing poisonous substances to\u00a0areas of\u00a0Khan Shaykhun, West of\u00a0Aleppo and Eastern Guta in\u00a0Syria.<\/p>\n

Chief of\u00a0the Russian General Staff Main Operational Directorate Col. Gen. Sergei Rudskoy said that the militants are trying to\u00a0provoke new accusations targeted at\u00a0Syrian government for\u00a0alleged use of\u00a0chemical weapons.
