{"id":68166,"date":"2017-07-24T16:46:20","date_gmt":"2017-07-24T23:46:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.lankaweb.com\/news\/items\/?p=68166"},"modified":"2017-07-24T16:46:20","modified_gmt":"2017-07-24T23:46:20","slug":"watch-sri-lankan-navy-rescues-stranded-elephants-swept-to-sea","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lankaweb.com\/news\/items\/2017\/07\/24\/watch-sri-lankan-navy-rescues-stranded-elephants-swept-to-sea\/","title":{"rendered":"WATCH: Sri Lankan Navy Rescues Stranded Elephants Swept to Sea"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"b-article__lead\">\n<h2><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>Courtesy sputnik<\/em><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Sometimes the idea of a flying elephant isn\u2019t the worst idea ever &#8211; we\u2019re looking at you, Dumbo.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"b-article__text\">\n<p class=\"marker-quote1\">Stranded in\u00a0the waters off\u00a0the coast of\u00a0Sri Lanka, two young elephants got the rescue of\u00a0a lifetime Sunday morning after\u00a0three Fast Attack navy ships, joined by\u00a0a group of\u00a0divers and experts from\u00a0the Trincomalee Wildlife Department, helped them return to\u00a0land.<\/p>\n<p>The rescue mission unfolded between\u00a0Sri Lanka\u2019s Round Island and Foul Point, just moments after\u00a0an inshore patrol craft spotted the struggling elephants during\u00a0their routine patrol of\u00a0the area.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"SL NAVY RESCUES TWO MORE JUMBOS IN THE SEAS OFF TRINCOMALEE\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/AV4vxQSXUj0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Footage shows the efforts of\u00a0smaller boats approaching the elephants in\u00a0their attempt to\u00a0tow them back to\u00a0land, while larger ships monitored the perimeter in\u00a0order to\u00a0keep the area clear of\u00a0any passing vessels.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Accordingly, the mammoth effort of\u00a0the rescue teams saw the two jumbos being carefully directed to\u00a0the shore without\u00a0causing any harm to\u00a0the animals,&#8221; stated the Sri Lankan navy\u2019s media release. &#8220;Having safely guided the two elephants to\u00a0the shore, they were subsequently released to\u00a0the Foul Point jungle.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They were extremely lucky to\u00a0have been spotted by\u00a0a patrol craft, which called in\u00a0several other boats to\u00a0help with\u00a0the rescue,&#8221; officials added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"marker-quote1\">While elephants are known to\u00a0swim for\u00a0short periods of\u00a0time, it is thought the animals nearly drowned when they were dragged out\u00a0further while crossing shallow lagoons in\u00a0the region, according to\u00a0The Guardian.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, this isn\u2019t the first time an elephant was swept out\u00a0to sea.
