{"id":69692,"date":"2017-09-12T14:38:59","date_gmt":"2017-09-12T21:38:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.lankaweb.com\/news\/items\/?p=69692"},"modified":"2017-09-12T14:39:19","modified_gmt":"2017-09-12T21:39:19","slug":"sri-lankan-minister-sacked-for-rocking-coalition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lankaweb.com\/news\/items\/2017\/09\/12\/sri-lankan-minister-sacked-for-rocking-coalition\/","title":{"rendered":"Sri Lankan minister sacked for rocking coalition"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div class=\"artSplitter mol-img-group\">\n<h2>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>Courtesy Mail on Line<\/em><\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"imageCaption\">Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena&#8217;s party has been the junior partner in the country&#8217;s coalition since August 2015<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena Tuesday sacked a minister who had threatened to split his coalition government, three weeks after another was fired for publicly criticising a government decision.<\/p>\n<p>Sirisena&#8217;s office said Arundika Fernando, junior minister for tourism and Christian affairs, was expelled from the government under the executive powers of the president.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"i-5d32bb9c63395edc\" class=\"blkBorder img-share b-loaded\" src=\"http:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1\/2017\/09\/12\/12\/wire-1324217-1505214696-631_634x421.jpg\" alt=\"Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena's party has been the junior partner in the country's coalition since August 2015\" width=\"634\" height=\"421\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The brief statement did not give a reason for his dismissal, but official sources said the move prevented Fernando from engineering defections to a breakaway faction of Sirisena&#8217;s Sri Lanka Freedom Party.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;With this sacking the president has asserted his authority and sent a signal he won&#8217;t hesitate to expel more,&#8221; a source close to the presidency said, citing Fernando\u00b4s previous assertion that around a dozen ministers were planning to leave the government.<\/p>\n<p>Fernando was not immediately available for comment, but he told the Lankadeepa daily website that his sacking was unlikely to discourage other dissidents in the government.<\/p>\n<p>Sirisena&#8217;s party, the junior partner in Sri Lanka&#8217;s coalition since August 2015, is already split between him and former strongman president Mahinda Rajapakse, who is an MP and has considerable support within the party.<\/p>\n<p>It is not yet clear whether the potential new faction was trying to join the side of the former president or remain as a third faction within the party.<\/p>\n<p>Three weeks ago Sirisena sacked justice minister Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe, who publicly denounced the government&#8217;s $1.1 billion sale in July of a 70 percent stake in a port to state-owned China Merchants Port Holdings.<\/p>\n<p>Sirisena and his Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe have vowed to continue their power-sharing arrangement until 2020 when the next general election is due.<\/p>\n<p>However, there are reports of squabbles within the coalition and many fiscal policy measures have been either toned down or completely withdrawn in recent months due to infighting.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0Courtesy Mail on Line Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena&#8217;s party has been the junior partner in the country&#8217;s coalition since August 2015 Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena Tuesday sacked a minister who had threatened to split his coalition government, three weeks after another was fired for publicly criticising a government decision.
