{"id":71970,"date":"2017-11-24T16:29:32","date_gmt":"2017-11-24T23:29:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.lankaweb.com\/news\/items\/?p=71970"},"modified":"2017-11-24T16:29:32","modified_gmt":"2017-11-24T23:29:32","slug":"lg-polls-gazette-ag-to-file-motion-for-early-hearing-of-petition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lankaweb.com\/news\/items\/2017\/11\/24\/lg-polls-gazette-ag-to-file-motion-for-early-hearing-of-petition\/","title":{"rendered":"LG polls gazette: AG to file motion for early hearing of petition"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>by Saman Indrajith\u00a0Courtesy The Island<\/em><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Attorney General Jayantha Jayasuriya has agreed to submit a motion calling for the early hearing of the petition filed before the Court of Appeal against the gazette related to local government polls.<\/p>\n<p>The AG\u2019s agreement was announced at the special party leaders\u2019 meeting yesterday evening at the Parliament complex. \u2008He would call for the hearing of the case on\u00a0Nov 30, party sources said.<\/p>\n<p>The AG told the party leaders that he would submit his motion\u00a0on Monday\u00a0(27).<\/p>\n<p>The party leaders\u2019 meeting was held with Speaker Karu Jayasuriya presiding at his office. Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, came directly from the airport after returning from India, to attend the meeting. Chairman of the Elections Commission Mahinda Deshapriya also attended the meeting.<\/p>\n<p>The party leaders submitted various proposals, according to sources.<\/p>\n<p>There were two main proposals\u2013\u2013one for expediting the judicial process and the other for submitting to Parliament a substantive motion to pass a law to rectify the delay caused by the error in the gazette.<\/p>\n<p>The Chairman of the Elections Commission stated that elections should be held to 133 local government bodies which had not been affected by the gazette.
