The US has threatened to re-evaluate its membership of the UN Human Rights Council, after it adopted five \u2018biased\u2019 anti-Israeli resolutions condemning its policies and calling on the world community to halt arms sales to Tel Aviv.<\/div>\n

Following a month-long 37th session in Geneva, the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) approved five \u2018anti-Israel\u2019 resolutions. One of the resolutions, titled ‘Ensuring accountability and justice for all violations of international law in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem’, condemned\u00a0all violations of human rights and of international humanitarian law\u201d<\/em>\u00a0against Palestinians.<\/p>\n

Acknowledging the\u00a0widespread and unprecedented levels of destruction, death and human suffering\u201d<\/em>\u00a0in the occupied territories, the UNHRC urged member states to stop selling arms to Tel Aviv.<\/p>\n

The resolution specifically\u00a0calls upon all States to promote compliance with international law\u201d<\/em>\u00a0to ensure that\u00a0authorities and private entities do not become involved in internationally unlawful conduct, inter alia the provision of arms to end users\u201d<\/em>\u00a0which engage in\u00a0serious violations of international humanitarian and\/or human rights law.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

The US, which signed the biggest military\u00a0agreement<\/a>\u00a0with Israel in September 2016, on Friday tried to protect its assets, worth $38 billion over 10 years. The agreement, which goes into effect in 2019, represents a 20 percent increase from the previous US aid deal of $3.1 billion annually. Slamming UNHRC’s anti-Israeli stance, US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley threatened that the US may quit the 47-member UN body.<\/p>\n

The United States continues to evaluate our membership in the Human Rights Council. Our patience is not unlimited,\u201d<\/em>Haley declared on Friday.\u00a0Today\u2019s actions make clear that the organization lacks the credibility needed to be a true advocate for human rights.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Haley also slammed the non-binding message contained in the other resolutions presented by the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation Council, under \u2018Agenda Item 7\u2019, which only covers Israel. Other country-specific resolutions of the day adopted by the Rights Council focused on Syria, South Sudan, Myanmar, Iran and North Korea.<\/p>\n

Four other Israel-related decisions which the UNHRC passed on Friday included a resolution which calls on Tel Aviv to withdraw from the Golan Heights, while another sought Palestinian self-determination along the 1967 borders. The fourth resolution condemned Israeli settlements, while the final document slammed Tel Aviv for human rights abuses against the Palestinians.<\/p>\n

All of the resolutions denounced the policies which Washington has been increasingly neglecting, and tacitly supporting, under the Donald Trump administration. Haley has called the council\u2019s actions\u00a0foolish\u201d<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0grossly biased\u201d<\/em>\u00a0against Israel.<\/p>\n

When the Human Rights Council treats Israel worse than North Korea, Iran, and Syria, it is the Council itself that is foolish and unworthy of its name,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0Haley said in the statement.\u00a0It is time for the countries who know better to demand changes. Many countries agree that the Council\u2019s agenda is grossly biased against Israel, but too few are willing to fight it.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

This is not the first time that the US envoy defended Israel\u2019s position at the UN. In December, Haley noted that the UN remains a hostile place for the State of Israel\u201d\u00a0<\/em>wondering<\/a>\u00a0why Israel would choose to remain in the UN given that body\u2019s clear antipathy towards the Jewish state.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0She has also defended Trump’s December 6 decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and\u00a0criticized<\/a>\u00a0the failure of the previous administration to veto December 2016\u2019s Security Council Resolution 2334, condemning Israeli settlements.<\/p>\n
