{"id":76625,"date":"2018-04-20T09:58:59","date_gmt":"2018-04-20T16:58:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.lankaweb.com\/news\/items\/?p=76625"},"modified":"2018-04-20T09:58:59","modified_gmt":"2018-04-20T16:58:59","slug":"sri-lanka-makes-it-obligatory-for-tuk-tuks-to-be-metered","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lankaweb.com\/news\/items\/2018\/04\/20\/sri-lanka-makes-it-obligatory-for-tuk-tuks-to-be-metered\/","title":{"rendered":"Sri Lanka makes it obligatory for tuk tuk\u2019s to be metered"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>Courtesy newsin.asia<\/em><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Colombo, April 20 (newsin.asia) \u2013 Sri Lanka\u2019s Transport Ministry, on Friday said it had been made obligatory for all three wheel services in the island country to fix a meter and issue a receipt at the end of the trip.<\/p>\n<div>The new\u00a0rule had been announced on April 1, but a two week grace period had been issued following a request made by the Taxi Driver\u2019s Association.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>A Transport Ministry official told<em>\u00a0newsin.asia<\/em>\u00a0that passengers could now request for a receipt at the end of their trip and those who faced any problems could lodge a complaint at the nearest police station.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Sri Lanka\u2019s three wheels, more popularly known as tuk tuk\u2019s, is a popular mode of public transport among the locals and tourists.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The Ministry official said the police had been vested with powers to arrest any three wheel driver who will not adhere to the new rule and fail to fix a meter.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>This new law has been made compulsory to regularize the public transport system as we have found that many three wheelers are yet not metered which leads to passengers complaining that they often get cheated,\u201d the official said.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Sri Lanka\u2019s Tourism Minister, John Amaratunga welcomed the move saying this would ensure a hassle free travel for the tourists.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Currently, there are around 750,000 operating three-wheelers as taxis in Sri Lanka.<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Courtesy newsin.asia Colombo, April 20 (newsin.asia) \u2013 Sri Lanka\u2019s Transport Ministry, on Friday said it had been made obligatory for all three wheel services in the island country to fix a meter and issue a receipt at the end of the trip.
