He was known as the &#8216;Lion of <\/span><a style=\"font-size: 16px;\" href=\"https:\/\/wikivisually.com\/wiki\/Kotte\">Kotte<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">&#8216; and was a prominent figure in the <\/span><a style=\"font-size: 16px;\" href=\"https:\/\/wikivisually.com\/wiki\/Sri_Lankan_independence_movement\">Sri Lankan independence movement<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"> and a <\/span><a style=\"font-size: 16px;\" href=\"https:\/\/wikivisually.com\/wiki\/Senate_of_Ceylon\">senator<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Early life and education<\/h2>\n<p>Born on 11 December 1875 at <a href=\"https:\/\/wikivisually.com\/wiki\/Unawatuna\">Unawatuna<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/wikivisually.com\/wiki\/Galle\">Galle<\/a> to Edward Francis Perera, <a href=\"https:\/\/wikivisually.com\/wiki\/Proctor\">Proctor<\/a> of Colombo. Raised as a devoted Christian, Perera was educated at <a href=\"https:\/\/wikivisually.com\/wiki\/Royal_College,_Colombo\">Royal College, Colombo<\/a> and was the first editor of the Royal College Magazine, he served as a sub-editor of the newspaper, Examiner until he was called to the Bar in May 1900. Having gone to England for further studies, he became a Barrister in 1909. Perera was a member of the first Reform Deputation in 1910.<\/p>\n<h3>\u00a0<strong>E. W. W. Perera, initiated by Sir <a style=\"font-size: 16px;\" href=\"https:\/\/wikivisually.com\/wiki\/James_Peiris\">James Peiris<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"> and presided over by Sir <\/span><a style=\"font-size: 16px;\" href=\"https:\/\/wikivisually.com\/wiki\/Ponnambalam_Ramanathan\">Ponnambalam Ramanathan<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">, before presenting it to his majesties government, the support of the British members of parliament and the press in England had to be obtained. Sea voyage was dangerous due to the presence of German submarines, which attacked ships and destroyed them. Abandoning a promising career at the Bar, E. W. Perera undertook the task of going over to England by obtaining permission saying he was going to do some research in the British museum. To his advantage, the British treated him as a scholarly Christian Barrister rather than a national patriot, he was accompanied by <\/span><a style=\"font-size: 16px;\" href=\"https:\/\/wikivisually.com\/wiki\/George_E._de_Silva\">George E. de Silva<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">. In England, he was joined by Sir Ponnambalam Ramanathan and later by Sir <\/span><a style=\"font-size: 16px;\" href=\"https:\/\/wikivisually.com\/wiki\/Don_Baron_Jayatilaka\">D.B Jayatilaka<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"> and they presented the memorandum to the <\/span><a style=\"font-size: 16px;\" href=\"https:\/\/wikivisually.com\/wiki\/Secretary_of_State_for_the_Colonies\">Secretary of State for the Colonies<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">, pleading for the repeal of <\/span><a style=\"font-size: 16px;\" href=\"https:\/\/wikivisually.com\/wiki\/Martial_law\">martial law<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"> and describing the atrocities committed by the Police led by Dowbiggin.<\/span><sup>[1]<\/sup><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"> The mission was a success, the British government ordered the release of the leaders who were in detention. Several high officials were transferred. A new Governor, Sir <\/span><a style=\"font-size: 16px;\" href=\"https:\/\/wikivisually.com\/wiki\/John_Anderson_(colonial_administrator)\">John Anderson<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"> was sent to replace Sir Robert Chalmers with instructions to inquire and report to His Majesty&#8217;s Government. E. W. Perera&#8217;s effort was greatly appreciated and he was thereafter referred to as <\/span><em style=\"font-size: 16px;\">the Lion of Kotte<\/em><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><br \/>\nDuring <\/span><a style=\"font-size: 16px;\" href=\"https:\/\/wikivisually.com\/wiki\/World_War_I\">World War I<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">, in 1915 commercial-ethnic rivalry erupted into a riot in Colombo against the Muslims, with Christians participating as much as Buddhists. Fearing an uprising the inexperienced British colonial <\/span><a style=\"font-size: 16px;\" href=\"https:\/\/wikivisually.com\/wiki\/Governor_of_Ceylon\">Governor of Ceylon<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"> Sir <\/span><a style=\"font-size: 16px;\" href=\"https:\/\/wikivisually.com\/wiki\/Robert_Chalmers,_1st_Baron_Chalmers\">Robert Chalmers<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"> declared <\/span><a style=\"font-size: 16px;\" href=\"https:\/\/wikivisually.com\/wiki\/Martial_Law\">Martial Law<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"> on 2 June 1915 and on the advice of Inspector General of Police <\/span><a style=\"font-size: 16px;\" href=\"https:\/\/wikivisually.com\/wiki\/Herbert_Dowbiggin\">Herbert Dowbiggin<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"> began a brutal suppression of the Sinhala community by giving orders to the Police and the Army to shoot any one who they deemed a rioter without a trial, it is said the numbers of Sinhalese killed this way were thousands.<\/span><sup>[<em><a href=\"https:\/\/wikivisually.com\/wiki\/Wikipedia:Citation_needed\">citation needed<\/a><\/em>]<\/sup><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"> Many local leaders, that included <\/span><a style=\"font-size: 16px;\" href=\"https:\/\/wikivisually.com\/wiki\/D._S._Senanayake\">D. S. Senanayake<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">, <\/span><a style=\"font-size: 16px;\" href=\"https:\/\/wikivisually.com\/wiki\/D._R._Wijewardena\">D. R. Wijewardena<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">, <\/span><a style=\"font-size: 16px;\" href=\"https:\/\/wikivisually.com\/wiki\/Arthur_V._Dias\">Arthur V. Dias<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">, Dr. Cassius Pereira, Dr. <\/span><a style=\"font-size: 16px;\" href=\"https:\/\/wikivisually.com\/wiki\/W._A._de_Silva\">W. A. de Silva<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">, F.R. Dias Bandaranaike, <\/span><a style=\"font-size: 16px;\" href=\"https:\/\/wikivisually.com\/wiki\/H._W._Amarasuriya#Early_life\">H. M. Amarasuriya<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">, A.H. Molamure where imprisoned and <\/span><a style=\"font-size: 16px;\" href=\"https:\/\/wikivisually.com\/wiki\/Captain_(land_and_air)\">Captain<\/a> <a style=\"font-size: 16px;\" href=\"https:\/\/wikivisually.com\/wiki\/Henry_Pedris\">D.E.Henry Pedris<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">, a militia commander, was shot for mutiny.<\/span>Role in the independence movement<\/p>\n<p>It was also E. W. Perera who with the help of <a href=\"https:\/\/wikivisually.com\/wiki\/D._R._Wijewardena\">D. R. Wijewardena<\/a>, the press baron (grandfarther of the current Prime Minister of Sri Lanka <a href=\"https:\/\/wikivisually.com\/wiki\/Ranil_Wickramasinghe\">Ranil Wickramasinghe<\/a>) traced the location of the banner of last King Sri Vikrama Rajasinghe, the last king of the <a href=\"https:\/\/wikivisually.com\/wiki\/Kingdom_of_Kandy\">Kingdom of Kandy<\/a> to the <a href=\"https:\/\/wikivisually.com\/wiki\/Royal_Hospital_Chelsea\">Royal Hospital Chelsea<\/a> where it was kept since the surrender of the Kingdom to the British in 1815. The recovered banner became a focal point in the independence movement and it became the flag of the <a href=\"https:\/\/wikivisually.com\/wiki\/Dominion_of_Ceylon\">Dominion of Ceylon<\/a> upon its independence in 1948.<sup>[2]<\/sup><\/p>\n<h2>Political career<\/h2>\n<p>He was a member of the Legislative Council \u2013 first as member from Western Province BH Division (1920) and then representing the <a href=\"https:\/\/wikivisually.com\/wiki\/Kalutara_District\">Kalutara District<\/a> (1924), as President of the <a href=\"https:\/\/wikivisually.com\/wiki\/Ceylon_National_Congress\">Ceylon National Congress<\/a>, he led its delegation before the Donoughmore Commission in 1926\/27. Sincere to his convictions, he opposed the granting of universal adult suffrage and broke with his colleagues in the Congress, he agitated for full freedom and formed the All-Ceylon Liberal Association with Sir <a href=\"https:\/\/wikivisually.com\/wiki\/James_Peiris\">James Peiris<\/a>. However, he was elected Member of the State Council for the <a href=\"https:\/\/wikivisually.com\/wiki\/Horana\">Horana<\/a> seat (1931) by a majority of 12,432 votes, he was a scholar and wrote several books.
