{"id":76943,"date":"2018-04-29T14:24:15","date_gmt":"2018-04-29T21:24:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.lankaweb.com\/news\/items\/?p=76943"},"modified":"2018-04-29T14:24:27","modified_gmt":"2018-04-29T21:24:27","slug":"india-to-send-buddhist-relics-for-vesak-in-sri-lanka","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lankaweb.com\/news\/items\/2018\/04\/29\/india-to-send-buddhist-relics-for-vesak-in-sri-lanka\/","title":{"rendered":"India to send Buddhist relics for Vesak in Sri Lanka"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>Courtesy\u00a0Xinhua<\/em><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>COLOMBO, April 26 (Xinhua) &#8212; India will send the sacred Buddhist relics to Sri Lanka for public veneration during the annual Vesak festival, a statement from the Indian High Commission in Sri Lanka said on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>Vesak is celebrated on April 29 this year in Sri Lanka to mark the birth, the enlightenment and passing away of the Buddha who founded the Buddhist religion.<\/p>\n<p>The statement said the relics would be brought from Sarnath, India for the first time for public exposition on the occasion of Vesak.<\/p>\n<p>The public can pay homage to these relics at &#8220;Temple Trees,&#8221; the Prime Minister&#8217;s official residence in Colombo from April 28 to May 2.<\/p>\n<p>Sarnath in India is historically significant since the Buddha preached his first sermon there.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The sacred relics of Sarnath are yet another manifestation of the shared Buddhist heritage of India and Sri Lanka. These Relics are enshrined at Mulagandhakuti Vihare at Saranth in India.
