{"id":77403,"date":"2018-05-16T15:10:52","date_gmt":"2018-05-16T22:10:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.lankaweb.com\/news\/items\/?p=77403"},"modified":"2018-05-16T15:10:52","modified_gmt":"2018-05-16T22:10:52","slug":"sri-lanka-aims-to-control-drought-floods-through-chinese-technology","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lankaweb.com\/news\/items\/2018\/05\/16\/sri-lanka-aims-to-control-drought-floods-through-chinese-technology\/","title":{"rendered":"Sri Lanka aims to control drought, floods through Chinese technology"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>Courtesy NewsIn.Asia<\/em><\/span><\/h2>\n<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<p>Colombo, May 16 (newsin.asia) \u2013 Sri Lanka is looking at the possibility of controlling droughts and floods through the use of Chinese Technology, \u00a0the local Daily Mirror, quoting Minister of Primary Industries and Social Welfare, Daya Gamage, said Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking at the signing of project agreements under the World Bank aided Agriculture Sector Modernization programme in capital Colombo, Gamage said the agriculture sector in Sri Lanka could contribute to the country\u2019s overall economic growth if it is able to stop droughts and floods just like it is done in China.<\/p>\n<p>He said experts from the Chinese Academy of Meteorological Sciences had already carried out a study on the formation of clouds above Sri Lanka and the findings will be handed over to the government soon.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Sri Lanka aims to control drought, floods through Chinese technology\" src=\"https:\/\/i2.wp.com\/newsin.asia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/drought-lanka.jpg?fit=660%2C440&amp;ssl=1\" alt=\"Sri Lanka aims to control drought, floods through Chinese technology\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Sri Lanka could earn more export revenue from crops such as cinnamon and ginger if such new industries are developed,\u201d the Minister said.<\/p>\n<p>We can learn from China,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, speaking at the event stressed the need for modernizing Sri Lanka\u2019s agricultural sector in order to make it a stable industry. Many countries such as USA and East Asian nations have modernized the agriculture industry though it has not been done in South Asia,\u201d Wickremesinghe said.<\/p>\n<p>The Prime Minister added that modernizing rural agriculture was essential as such a growth would help improve the rural economy, which in turn would strengthen the country\u2019s economy.<\/p>\n<p>The Disaster Management Center, in its latest report said that over 600,000 people remained affected by severe drought in at least 11 districts of the island country due to the lack of rains.<\/p>\n<p>DMC Spokesperson, Pradeep Kodippili said people had been affected in terms of scarcity of drinking water and crop failures.<\/p>\n<div>Sri Lanka has also been facing deadly floods and landslides in the past three years during the South West Monsoons in May with hundreds of deaths reported and thousands displaced.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Courtesy NewsIn.Asia Colombo, May 16 (newsin.asia) \u2013 Sri Lanka is looking at the possibility of controlling droughts and floods through the use of Chinese Technology, \u00a0the local Daily Mirror, quoting Minister of Primary Industries and Social Welfare, Daya Gamage, said Wednesday.
