He also kept a travel diary, noting in stark, often racist terms his impressions of the people he encountered on stops in Hong Kong and Singapore, China, Japan, India and Palestine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1i0edl6 e2kc3sl0\">The personal writings do not only reveal the musings of a man grappling with a jolt to his view of the world. He once said in an interview, Being a Jew myself, perhaps I can understand and empathize with how black people feel as victims of discrimination.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1i0edl6 e2kc3sl0\">But in his private writings on that journey from October 1922 to March 1923, other peoples are portrayed as being biologically inferior, a clear hallmark of racism,\u201d according to Ze\u2019ev Rosenkranz, assistant director of the Einstein Papers Project at the California Institute of Technology and the editor of the book.<\/p>\n<div class=\"InlineMessage-inline--2ysnq\">\n<div class=\"css-10klw3m optimizelyOK vi_inline\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"css-1i0edl6 e2kc3sl0\">I think a lot of comments strike us as pretty unpleasant \u2014 what he says about the Chinese in particular,\u201d Mr. Rosenkranz\u00a0<a class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/books\/2018\/jun\/12\/einsteins-travel-diaries-reveal-shocking-xenophobia?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told The Guardian<\/a>. They\u2019re kind of in contrast to the public image of the great humanitarian icon. I think it\u2019s quite a shock to read those and contrast them with his more public statements. They\u2019re more off guard; he didn\u2019t intend them for publication.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1i0edl6 e2kc3sl0\">Mr. Rosenkranz was traveling and could not be reached for comment, Caltech said on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1i0edl6 e2kc3sl0\">When Einstein set out on his journey, he was in his 40s, already renowned for his work on the\u00a0<a class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/technology\/archive\/2014\/09\/einstein-didnt-win-a-nobel-for-relativity-he-won-it-for-this\/380451\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">photoelectric effect<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2015\/11\/24\/science\/a-century-ago-einsteins-theory-of-relativity-changed-everything.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">on relativity<\/a>, and developing a second reputation as a progressive public figure.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1i0edl6 e2kc3sl0\">The travel diaries, however, lay bare a different side of a remarkable mind.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1i0edl6 e2kc3sl0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz euv7paa0\">In Hong Kong<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1i0edl6 e2kc3sl0\">\u2022 He expresses sympathy for the stricken people, men and women, who beat stones daily and must heave them for 5 cents a day.\u201d He adds, The Chinese are severely punished for the fecundity by the insensitive economic machine.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-14jsv4e\"><\/aside>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"css-190ncxp edz5sly0\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"css-18sbwfn StoryBodyCompanionColumn\">\n<div class=\"css-1h6whtw\">\n<p class=\"css-1i0edl6 e2kc3sl0\">\u2022 He quotes Portuguese teachers who say, The Chinese are incapable of being trained to think logically and that they specifically have no talent for mathematics.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1i0edl6 e2kc3sl0\">\u2022 He adds: I noticed how little difference there is between men and women; I don\u2019t understand what kind of fatal attraction Chinese women possess which enthralls the corresponding men to such an extent that they are incapable of defending themselves against the formidable blessing of offspring.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1i0edl6 e2kc3sl0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz euv7paa0\">Around mainland China<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1i0edl6 e2kc3sl0\">\u2022 He writes of observing industrious, filthy, obtuse people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1i0edl6 e2kc3sl0\">\u2022 Chinese don\u2019t sit on benches while eating but squat like Europeans do when they relieve themselves out in the leafy woods. All this occurs quietly and demurely. Even the children are spiritless and look obtuse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1i0edl6 e2kc3sl0\">\u2022 It would be a pity if these Chinese supplant all other races. For the likes of us, the mere thought is unspeakably dreary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1i0edl6 e2kc3sl0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz euv7paa0\">In Shanghai<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1i0edl6 e2kc3sl0\">\u2022 A Chinese funeral is described as barbaric for our taste,\u201d the streets swarming with pedestrians.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1i0edl6 e2kc3sl0\">\u2022 In the air there is a stench of never-ending manifold variety.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1i0edl6 e2kc3sl0\">\u2022 Even those reduced to working like horses never give the impression of conscious suffering. A peculiar herd-like nation,\u201d he writes, often more like automatons than people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1i0edl6 e2kc3sl0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz euv7paa0\">In Japan<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1i0edl6 e2kc3sl0\">\u2022 Japanese unostentatious, decent, altogether very appealing,\u201d Einstein writes, adopting a more flattering tone, though in some instances it veers into eugenic territory.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"css-18sbwfn StoryBodyCompanionColumn\">\n<div class=\"css-1h6whtw\">\n<p class=\"css-1i0edl6 e2kc3sl0\">\u2022 Pure souls as nowhere else among people. One has to love and admire this country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1i0edl6 e2kc3sl0\">\u2022 Intellectual needs of this nation seem to be weaker than their artistic ones \u2014 natural disposition?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1i0edl6 e2kc3sl0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz euv7paa0\">In Ceylon:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1i0edl6 e2kc3sl0\">\u2022 Visiting the British colony that later became Sri Lanka, Einstein writes that the residents of Colombo live in great filth and considerable stench at ground level,\u201d adding that they do little, and need little. The simple economic cycle of life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1i0edl6 e2kc3sl0\">While many may insist on dismissing the diary entries as merely reflecting the attitudes of the era, Mr. Rosenkranz told The Guardian, the xenophobia and prejudice they revealed had been far from universal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1i0edl6 e2kc3sl0\">That\u2019s usually the reaction I get: \u2018We have to understand, he was of the zeitgeist, part of the time,\u2019 \u201d he said. But I think I tried here and there to give a broader context. There were other views out there, more tolerant views.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1i0edl6 e2kc3sl0\">In China, however, many social media users seemed willing to give Einstein the benefit of the doubt, or even to agree with him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1i0edl6 e2kc3sl0\">That was the impression China gave to the world back then,\u201d wrote one user of Weibo, a Twitter-like social network. If it were now, Einstein wouldn\u2019t say such things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1i0edl6 e2kc3sl0\">Diaries are extension of private thought, and there\u2019s no sin in thought,\u201d a Weibo user said. No matter what he thinks, as long as he doesn\u2019t speak or act in a racist way, then you cannot implicate him. Not to mention the racial climate back then and the limitations of his own youth.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-14jsv4e\"><\/aside>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"story-ad-4-wrapper\" class=\"ResponsiveAd-storyBodyAd--35v2w\">\n<div id=\"story-ad-4-slug\" class=\"ResponsiveAd-adSlug--3H3QM\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"ad story-ad-4-wrapper\">\n<div id=\"story-ad-4\" data-google-query-id=\"CLHc0-Xs09sCFc-v7QodX_oKSA\">\n<div id=\"google_ads_iframe_\/29390238\/nyt\/world_7__container__\">A few pushed back. With what you\u2019re saying, you\u2019re acknowledging Einstein\u2019s racism toward the Chinese and making excuses for him,\u201d one person wrote in a blog post.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"css-18sbwfn StoryBodyCompanionColumn\">\n<div class=\"css-1h6whtw\">\n<p class=\"css-1i0edl6 e2kc3sl0\">If anything, Einstein\u2019s travel diaries add an unexpected twist to the legacy of man who, in no uncertain terms, evolved.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1i0edl6 e2kc3sl0\">For instance, when his 11-year first marriage \u2014 to a fellow scientist, Mileva Maric \u2014 was failing, he crafted a misogynist manifesto in an apparent belief that it would help save the union, according to Einstein: His Life and Universe,\u201d by Walter Isaacson.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1i0edl6 e2kc3sl0\">Einstein demanded, among other things, that she keep his rooms tidy, bring him three meals a day and stop talking when he requested \u2014 with no expectations that he would return the favor. A few months later, she left him; they divorced in 1919.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1i0edl6 e2kc3sl0\">Einstein\u2019s shifting views may be most powerfully illustrated by the way he put his scientific fame at the service of the American civil rights movement.\u00a0<a class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/science-nature\/how-celebrity-scientist-albert-einstein-used-fame-denounce-american-racism-180962356\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">According to Smithsonian Magazine<\/a>, in 1931 he joined a committee to protest the injustice of the Scottsboro Boys trial in Alabama, in which nine African-American youths were falsely accused of raping two white women.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1i0edl6 e2kc3sl0\">And in a 1946 commencement speech at Lincoln University in Pennsylvania, he declared: There is separation of colored people from white people in the United States. It is a disease of white people.
