Stating that\u00a0Sri Lankans believe in the ability of religions to contribute to building peace and stability around the world, he acknowledged challenges to inter-religious understanding and harmony in Sri Lanka, and outlined steps being taken to overcome challenges and advance religious freedom. He also stressed that Sri Lanka will join the international community to\u00a0foster what the world needs most today to progress \u2013 peace, compassion, mindfulness, and justice, and recognition of our common humanity.<\/p>\n<p>These remarks were a part of the Secretary\u2019s opening statement to the first Conference to Advance Religious Freedom hosted by the US Secretary of State Michael R. Pompeo from July 24-26 in Washington D.C.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-79676\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lankaweb.com\/news\/items\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/NYRelfreedomA.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lankaweb.com\/news\/items\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/NYRelfreedomA.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.lankaweb.com\/news\/items\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/NYRelfreedomA-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Government representatives of over 80 countries, as well as religious leaders, civil society representatives, representatives of non-governmental and international organizations participated in this Conference to discuss challenges facing religious freedom globally and to develop responses and solutions to address religious persecution and discrimination.<\/p>\n<p>Inaugurating the Conference, U.S. Secretary of State Michael R.
