{"id":80079,"date":"2018-08-10T16:04:05","date_gmt":"2018-08-10T23:04:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.lankaweb.com\/news\/items\/?p=80079"},"modified":"2018-08-10T16:04:05","modified_gmt":"2018-08-10T23:04:05","slug":"human-zoos-at-the-turn-of-the-20th-century","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lankaweb.com\/news\/items\/2018\/08\/10\/human-zoos-at-the-turn-of-the-20th-century\/","title":{"rendered":"Human Zoos at the Turn of the 20th Century"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"content-post\">\n<div class=\"post-meta\">\n<h2 class=\"byline\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/author\/lisa\">Lisa Wade, PhD<\/a>\u00a0on October 15, 2012 Courtesy The Society Pages<\/em><\/span><\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"post-content\">\n<p><em>***TRIGGER WARNING for racism and enslavement***<\/em><\/p>\n<p>During a dark period of world history, intellectuals pondered where to draw the line between human and animal. \u00a0They arrayed humans hierarchically, from the lightest to the darkest skin. \u00a0Believing that Africans were ape-like,\u00a0<a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2012\/07\/12\/whites-blacks-apes-in-the-great-chain-of-being\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">they weren\u2019t sure whether to include apes as human, or Africans as apes<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>One artifact of this thinking was the human zoo.\u201d \u00a0Kidnapped from their homes at the end of the 19th century and into the next, hundreds of indigenous people were put on display for white Westerners to view. \u00a0Often they were displayed in villages built in zoos specifically for the show,\u201d according to a\u00a0<a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.spiegel.de\/international\/zeitgeist\/europe-s-human-zoos-remains-of-indigenous-abductees-back-home-after-130-years-a-671759.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Spiegel Online<\/em><\/a>\u00a0sent in by Katrin, but they were also made to perform on stage for the amusement of a paying public.\u201d \u00a0Many died quickly, being exposed to diseases foreign to them.<\/p>\n<p>This group of captives is from Sri Lanka (called\u00a0\u00a0Ceylon at the time):<a class=\"shutterset_51636\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/10\/17.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-51640\" title=\"1\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/10\/17-500x313.jpg\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/10\/17-500x313.jpg 500w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/10\/17.jpg 759w\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"313\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This photograph commemorates a show called Les Indes,\u201d featuring captives\u00a0from India:<a class=\"shutterset_51636\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/10\/23.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-1\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-51641\" title=\"2\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/10\/23-500x317.jpg\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/10\/23-500x317.jpg 500w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/10\/23.jpg 765w\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"317\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>These captives are from Oromo in Ethiopia:<a class=\"shutterset_51636\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/10\/32.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-2\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-51639\" title=\"3\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/10\/32-500x330.jpg\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/10\/32-500x330.jpg 500w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/10\/32.jpg 767w\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"330\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A German named\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Carl_Hagenbeck\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Carl Hagenbeck<\/a>\u00a0was among the more famous men involved in human zoos. \u00a0He would go on expeditions in foreign countries and bring back both animals and people for European collections. \u00a0In his memoirs, he spoke of his involvement with pride, writing: it was my privilege to be the first in the civilized world to present these shows of different races.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The zoo in Hamburg still bears his name.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"ft_signature\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/lisa-wade.com\/\">Lisa Wade, PhD<\/a>\u00a0is a professor\u00a0at Occidental College.
