H\u00c0 N\u1ed8I \u2014 Vi\u1ec7t Nam welcomed San Francisco\u2019s landmark verdict against Monsanto and called upon the company to pay compensation for Agent Orange victims in Vi\u1ec7t Nam, deputy foreign ministry spokesperson Nguy\u1ec5n Ph\u01b0\u01a1ng Tr\u00e0 told a press briefing in H\u00e0 N\u1ed9i on Thursday.<\/p>\n

The verdict serves as a legal precedent which refutes previous claims that the herbicides made by Monsanto and other chemical corporations in the US and provided for the US army in the war are harmless,\u201d Tr\u00e0 said in response to the media\u2019s queries on the Vietnamese Government\u2019s reaction to the decision by a US court asking that Monsanto pay US$289 million to an American citizen who claimed that the company\u2019s weed killer contained undisclosed carcinogens.<\/p>\n


\nDeputy foreign ministry spokesperson Nguy\u1ec5n Ph\u01b0\u01a1ng Tr\u00e0 responded to questions from the media during a press conference held in H\u00e0 N\u1ed9i on Thursday. \u2014 VNA\/VNS Photo D\u01b0\u01a1ng Giang<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Vi\u1ec7t Nam has suffered tremendous consequences from the war, especially with regard to the lasting and devastating effects of toxic chemicals, including Agent Orange,\u201d Tr\u00e0 said, referring to a heavily controversial herbicide and defoliant manufactured by the Missouri-based agrobusiness multinational and used extensively by the US Army during the war in Vi\u1ec7t Nam in the 1960-70s, which have shown links to widespread illnesses and birth defects among those exposed to it.<\/p>\n

Up to 80 million litres of herbicides were sprayed over an area comparable to one fourth of southern Vi\u1ec7t Nam, destroying the natural environment and leaving three million Vietnamese grappling with health issues.<\/p>\n

South China Sea<\/strong><\/p>\n

Responding to press queries on the Vietnamese Government\u2019s reaction to Chinese Taiwan\u2019s live fire drills in Ba B\u00ecnh (Itu Aba) island as well as allegations of Chinese deployment of nuclear weapons in the South China Sea, the foreign ministry official reaffirmed Vi\u1ec7t Nam\u2019s full legal and historical evidence for its sovereignty claims over the Tr\u01b0\u1eddng Sa (Spratly) archipelago.<\/p>\n

Vi\u1ec7t Nam protests any act that disrupts peace and stability and complicates the situation in the South China Sea (called East Sea by Vi\u1ec7t Nam), and demands the offending parties cease and not repeat such actions in the future, deputy spokesperson Tr\u00e0 said.<\/p>\n

Maintaining peace, stability, maritime security and overflight freedom are mutual responsibilities and duties of all countries in the region and in the world. All concerned parties have the obligation to contribute to these causes,\u201d Tr\u00e0 said. Earlier yesterday, the government of the Philippines expressed concerns over \u2018US observation\u2019 on alleged possible introduction of nuclear weapons in the South China Sea, and stressed that the region is a nuclear-free zone.<\/p>\n

On whether the recent arrests of anti-State criminals, which include American citizens and Vietnamese citizens, would affect the relationship between the two countries, Tr\u00e0 said that any person, no matter their citizenship, who violate Vietnamese law within Vietnamese territory would be subject to appropriate legal punishments.<\/p>\n

Concerning the ongoing trial against \u0110o\u00e0n Th\u1ecb H\u01b0\u01a1ng, who allegedly murdered the Democratic People\u2019s Republic of Korea (DPRK) citizen Kim Chol, the Vietnamese Embassy in Malaysia has said H\u01b0\u01a1ng is supposed to defend herself in front of the court on three occasions in January and February next year.<\/p>\n

The Vietnamese Embassy is currently working with H\u01b0\u01a1ng\u2019s lawyers to prepare her defence, and is willing to help H\u01b0\u01a1ng\u2019s family in Vi\u1ec7t Nam to come to Malaysia should they wish, Tr\u00e0 said. \u2014 VNS<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
