Batticalao, September 15 (newsin.asia): The High Commissioner of India Taranjit Singh Sandhu\u00a0 visited the\u00a0first ever\u00a0cooperative society of war affected women\u00a0in the Eastern Province at\u00a0Kallady set up by an India-based NGO the Self Employed Women\u2019s Association (SEWA), with a grant of LKR 197 million (US$ 1.2 million) from the Government of India.<\/p>\n

The objective is to empower war affected women by building their capacities in vocations, leadership, entrepreneurial and management skills by setting up a Trade Facilitation Center and a Community\u00a0Learning Centre\u00a0in\u00a0Batticaloa\u00a0and\u00a0Ampara.<\/p>\n

Under the project, SEWA has trained 40 war affected\/destitute women from Batticaloa District. These women were trained in various vocational areas such as Textiles and Garments; Surface Ornamentation; Agro food processing; Computers; Enterprise Development; Solar lantern and roof rain water harvesting.<\/p>\n

Other projects undertaken by India in the social sector include construction of surgical unit in teaching Hospital Batticaloa,\u00a0Upgrading the Swami\u00a0Vipulananda\u00a0Aesthetic School in Batticaloa, construction of 3400 toilets in Batticaloa District, and Model village in all three districts.<\/p>\n

India\u2019s overall commitment of assistance to Sri Lanka for people-oriented development partnership projects stands at a total of around US$ 3 billion, out of which US$ 550 million is pure grant assistance.<\/p>\n

High Commissioner Sandhu inaugurated a house built under the Indian Housing Project to construct 4000 houses in the Eastern Province which is one of the two provinces which took the brunt of the 30-year war against Tamil militants.<\/p>\n

Other projects undertaken by India in the social sector include construction of surgical unit in teaching Hospital Batticaloa,\u00a0Upgrading the Swami\u00a0Vipulananda\u00a0Aesthetic School in Batticaloa, construction of 3400 toilets in Batticaloa District, and Model village in all three districts.<\/p>\n

The envoy was the Chief Guest at the convocation of the Eastern University and met representatives of the Tamil National Alliance and the mosque federations.<\/p>\n

At Tricomalee he met the Governor of the Eastern Province Rohitha Bogollagama.<\/p>\n
