This follows Thai Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha&#8217;s state visit to Colombo in July, when the two countries agreed to seek ways to triple bilateral trade to $1.5 billion by the end of 2020.<\/p>\n<p>The move comes as prospects dim for a<a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/asia.nikkei.com\/Politics\/International-Relations\/Modi-heads-to-regional-summit-in-shadow-of-China-s-growing-sway\">\u00a0seven-nation trade deal<\/a>\u00a0between Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Myanmar and Thailand. Bangkok sees bilateral deals as a way to move forward, saying it is making good progress in setting up pacts with nations such as Turkey, Pakistan and Chile.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ads__upper-inline-container\">\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"img-fluid\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/__origami\/service\/image\/v2\/images\/raw\/https%3A%2F%2Fs3-ap-northeast-1.amazonaws.com%2Fpsh-ex-ftnikkei-3937bb4%2Fimages%2F4%2F0%2F7%2F4%2F15804704-1-eng-GB%2FGettyImages-954052990.jpg?source=nar-cms\" width=\"643\" height=\"362\" \/><br \/>\n<span class=\"article__caption\">The China-backed Colombo Port City in Sri Lanka\u00a0 @GettyImages<\/span><\/div>\n<p>Auramon Supthaweethum, director general of the trade negotiation department under Thailand&#8217;s Commerce Ministry, said this week that massive Chinese infrastructure investment in Sri Lanka has made the island attractive as a short cut to other regional markets, as it has pacts with India and other South Asian nations.<\/p>\n<p>The Belt and Road Initiative refers to planned transport routes through Asia into Europe and Africa. It\u00a0aims\u00a0to support infrastructure construction in more than 70 countries to create channels for Chinese businesses to expand in these markets, while also increasing Beijing&#8217;s political and military influence.<\/p>\n<div class=\"align-center ez-embed-type-image\">\n<div class=\"article__image article__image--lightbox article__image--inline\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"img-fluid\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/__origami\/service\/image\/v2\/images\/raw\/https%3A%2F%2Fs3-ap-northeast-1.amazonaws.com%2Fpsh-ex-ftnikkei-3937bb4%2Fimages%2F_aliases%2Farticleimage%2F2%2F2%2F6%2F2%2F15802622-1-eng-GB%2F20180907-China-bri-Map.png?source=nar-cms\" \/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Some analysts are skeptical about Chinese loans to emerging economies, calling China&#8217;s aid a debt trap.
