It still won\u2019t be easy, he added, because President Abdulla Yameen will likely do everything to stay in power \u2013 vote rigging, gang violence, even intervention by the police and the army.<\/p>\n<p>Nasheed had\u00a0<a class=\"link-external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/02\/nasheed-seeks-india-intervention-maldives-crisis-180206082645227.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">asked<\/a>\u00a0for the Indian military\u2019s help to resolve the Maldives\u2019 political crisis after Yameen imposed a state of emergency early this year. On Friday, though, he claimed the opposition intended to overcome the political turmoil through its own efforts. Do you know why I am not asking any country to be physically involved in the Maldives?\u201d he asked, without naming India. Because no country has the imagination to do it. Perhaps they do not have the capacity to do it.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"teads-inread sm-screen\">\n<div class=\"teads-ui-components-adchoices\">\u00a0Coming from a long-time champion of stronger India-Maldives ties, this is a scathing indictment of Delhi\u2019s fumbling foreign policy. Relations between the two countries have reached rock bottom in the past three years even as China has gained a\u00a0<a class=\"link-external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?sa=t&amp;rct=j&amp;q=&amp;esrc=s&amp;source=web&amp;cd=1&amp;ved=2ahUKEwi4p8-gpc7dAhUX3Y8KHd7qDBgQFjAAegQICRAB&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fforeignpolicy.com%2F2018%2F03%2F21%2Fis-abdulla-yameen-handing-over-the-maldives-to-china%2F&amp;usg=AOvVaw1znavRrA-4WufQ_yM2Kwpy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">foothold<\/a>\u00a0in the region through trade deals and infrastructure projects. The cold war\u201d in the Indian Ocean has\u00a0<a class=\"link-external\" href=\"https:\/\/maldivesindependent.com\/feature-comment\/indians-in-maldives-anxious-and-uncertain-over-future-140540\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">affected<\/a>\u00a0around 30,000 Indian expatriates as the Maldives has stopped issuing and renewing their work and dependent visas since earlier this year.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>A second term for Yameen could mark the death of the Maldives\u2019 decades-old\u00a0<a class=\"link-external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hindustantimes.com\/india-news\/maldives-committed-to-india-first-policy-male-to-new-delhi\/story-uvWplzYARSuYTisa5NyyZL.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">India-first\u00a0<\/a>foreign policy.\u00a0<a class=\"link-external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/06\/18\/world\/asia\/maldives-islamic-radicalism.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Rising<\/a>\u00a0Islamic fundamentalism in the island nation would mean additional worries for India\u2019s internal security. Most importantly, for all its grand talk of making India a\u00a0<a class=\"link-external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.indiatoday.in\/india\/story\/pm-modi-india-global-superpower-yogi-adityanath-1059874-2017-10-07\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">global superpower<\/a>, the Narendra Modi government would have undermined India\u2019s traditional status as a regional superpower.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"cms-block cms-block-heading\"><strong>Unusual election<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>This presidential election is unusual for several reasons. Yameen has succeeded in declaring all those candidates who contested in 2013 as constitutionally ineligible. Forced into a corner, the democrat Maldivian Democratic Party, the republican Jumhooree Party as well as the religious Adhaalath Party have joined forces against Yameen. This <a class=\"link-external\" href=\"https:\/\/maldivesindependent.com\/politics\/campaign-trail-cocktail-coalition-140610\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">cocktail coalition<\/a>\u201d is led by Ibu Solih, a veteran lawmaker from the Maldivian Democratic Party. His deputy is Faisal Naseem, a fresh-faced MP from the Jumhooree Party. Neither is an obvious choice for the top job and both are widely understood to be stand-ins for their more charismatic leaders-in-exile \u2013 Nasheed and the tourism tycoon Gasim Ibrahim, once the richest man in the Maldives\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>They face a daunting task. For months, the opposition, civil society and many international watchdogs have criticised the country\u2019s election commission for voter list\u00a0<a class=\"link-external\" href=\"https:\/\/maldivesindependent.com\/politics\/maldives-election-body-denies-voter-registration-fraud-140305\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">manipulation<\/a>,\u00a0<a class=\"link-external\" href=\"https:\/\/maldivesindependent.com\/politics\/polling-stations-scrapped-for-singapore-delhi-and-nine-resorts-140541\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">inadequate<\/a>\u00a0ballot boxes and giving the ruling party access to\u00a0<a class=\"link-external\" href=\"http:\/\/en.mihaaru.com\/news\/6976\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">classified information<\/a>. The police too have doubled down on the opposition,\u00a0<a class=\"link-external\" href=\"https:\/\/maldivesindependent.com\/politics\/mdp-cries-foul-as-police-tear-up-campaign-posters-138962\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">taking off\u00a0<\/a>campaign posters,\u00a0<a class=\"link-external\" href=\"https:\/\/maldivesindependent.com\/politics\/opposition-permitted-to-hold-rally-in-capitals-carnival-area-140792\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">refusing\u00a0<\/a>permission for rallies and\u00a0<a class=\"link-external\" href=\"https:\/\/maldivesindependent.com\/politics\/maldives-police-deny-obstructing-opposition-campaign-140432\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">arresting<\/a>\u00a0activists. In response, the\u00a0<a class=\"link-external\" href=\"https:\/\/maldivesindependent.com\/politics\/eu-approves-targeted-sanctions-on-maldives-government-officials-139386\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">European Union\u00a0<\/a>and the\u00a0<a class=\"link-external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hindustantimes.com\/world-news\/us-threatens-maldives-with-sanctions-if-it-fails-to-hold-fair-elections\/story-ksEg46A2hMyvhU0ysaA0iK.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">United States<\/a>\u00a0have threatened targeted sanctions against the government.<\/p>\n<div class=\"in-article-adx\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1530701734090-2-5\" class=\"adsbygoogle\" data-google-query-id=\"CJiiz5CK0t0CFcjj7Qodak4Kyw\">\n<div id=\"google_ads_iframe_\/21719278143\/scroll-web-all-in-article_0__container__\">But Yameen has scoffed at his critics and accused the West of\u00a0<a class=\"link-external\" href=\"https:\/\/maldivesindependent.com\/politics\/campaign-trail-imperialist-influence-141034\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">imperialism<\/a>and\u00a0<a class=\"link-external\" href=\"https:\/\/maldivesindependent.com\/politics\/maldives-accuses-us-of-coercion-and-intimidation-after-sanctions-threat-140912\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">interference<\/a>. His electoral pitch rests mainly on his\u00a0<a class=\"link-external\" href=\"https:\/\/maldivesindependent.com\/politics\/maldives-president-lied-about-island-development-140785\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">claims<\/a>\u00a0of bringing about <a class=\"link-external\" href=\"https:\/\/maldivesindependent.com\/politics\/china-maldives-fta-will-usher-in-revolutionary-development-says-yameen-134535\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">revolutionary<\/a>\u201d development. He is insolent about forging diplomatic ties with China, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan at the cost of Indian interests. In the 21st century, the Maldives will not sit back and wait for people to come and give aid to them,\u201d\u00a0<a class=\"link-external\" href=\"https:\/\/maldivesindependent.com\/feature-comment\/sanctions-elections-the-maldives-and-india-a-qa-with-mohamed-shainee-141015\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">sa<\/a><a class=\"link-external\" href=\"https:\/\/maldivesindependent.com\/feature-comment\/sanctions-elections-the-maldives-and-india-a-qa-with-mohamed-shainee-141015\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">id<\/a>\u00a0Mohamed Shainee, the fisheries minister and close confidant of the president. We will knock on the door of whoever is willing to give us aid and be our development partner. We had requested India first, but found it difficult.\u201d<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Shainee claimed he was confident about Yameen\u2019s electoral prospects. The ruling party, he said, will win 70% votes.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"cms-block cms-block-heading\"><strong>India\u2019s failure<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>That Yameen has survived a full term despite the\u00a0<a class=\"link-external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/09\/report-exposes-maldives-orgy-corruption-election-180917121608752.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">laundry list\u00a0<\/a>of corruption charges against him indicates the abject failure of the Maldives\u2019 experiment with democracy. He transferred or removed dozens of MPs and ministers, had two judges dragged out of the Supreme Court and arrested and two vice presidents sacked and arrested. He sent the army to disrupt ongoing sessions of Parliament, installed his loyalists in the country\u2019s independent institutions, and imposed two states of emergency.<\/p>\n<p>The opposition has repeatedly beseeched India for help over the years, to no avail. When the Indian foreign ministry started issuing statements expressing <a class=\"link-external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.indiatoday.in\/india\/story\/india-expresses-dismay-over-political-situation-in-maldives-1260301-2018-06-14\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">dismay<\/a>\u201d and <a class=\"link-external\" href=\"https:\/\/timesofindia.indiatimes.com\/india\/india-concerned-over-attempts-to-rig-polls-in-maldives\/articleshow\/65905611.cms\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">concern<\/a>\u201d at the political turmoil in recent months, even the Chinese state media responded with\u00a0<a class=\"link-external\" href=\"https:\/\/maldivesindependent.com\/politics\/china-tells-india-to-calm-down-after-maldives-trade-deal-134423\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">condescension<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a class=\"link-external\" href=\"https:\/\/maldivesindependent.com\/politics\/india-warned-over-ill-willed-provocation-towards-maldives-140987\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">threats<\/a>. Meanwhile, the Yameen government has used their backing by non-Muslim countries as evidence of the opposition parties\u2019 agenda of\u00a0<a class=\"link-external\" href=\"https:\/\/psmnews.mv\/en\/38270\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">diluting<\/a>\u00a0the Maldives\u2019s Islamic identity. To demonstrate his own commitment to the religious order, he\u00a0<a class=\"link-external\" href=\"https:\/\/maldivesindependent.com\/business\/maldives-resort-ordered-to-remove-idols-139554\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">directed<\/a>\u00a0the police on Friday to\u00a0<a class=\"link-external\" href=\"https:\/\/maldivesindependent.com\/society\/maldives-resort-cleared-of-idols-say-police-141385\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">destroy<\/a>\u00a0anti-Islamic\u201d sculptures in an underwater art gallery. That Yameen himself is accused of\u00a0<a class=\"link-external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/worldnews\/africaandindianocean\/maldives\/12156701\/Sri-Lankan-witch-doctor-claims-he-used-black-magic-to-elect-president-of-the-Maldives.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">practising sorcery<\/a>\u00a0to win elections, considered an anti-Islamic practice, has not held him back.<\/p>\n<p>More worryingly for India, a senior Indian official said the Maldives has been in denial about China\u2019s increasing presence in the country, and what it means. They are ignoring widespread concerns among Maldivians, as well as international researchers and scholars, about the potentially serious implications of rapidly growing, unsustainable foreign debt towards exorbitantly priced projects being implemented without any transparency and institutionalised scrutiny, or checks and balances,\u201d the official said. Also, all traditional partners and friends of Maldives are concerned about functioning of democratic and other independent institutions, including judiciary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>India has been mum about what role it might play in the event of Yameen continuing for another term. Nasheed has claimed he will continue to fight and even contest the parliamentary polls scheduled to be held in six months. The way you build a democracy is not by running away from it,\u201d he said at the press conference.
