{"id":81577,"date":"2018-10-01T15:41:03","date_gmt":"2018-10-01T22:41:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.lankaweb.com\/news\/items\/?p=81577"},"modified":"2018-10-01T15:41:03","modified_gmt":"2018-10-01T22:41:03","slug":"only-80-certainty-over-suffolk-businessmans-body","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lankaweb.com\/news\/items\/2018\/10\/01\/only-80-certainty-over-suffolk-businessmans-body\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Only 80%&#8217; certainty over Suffolk businessman&#8217;s body"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 class=\"story-body__introduction\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>Courtesy\u00a0BBC<\/em><\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"story-body__introduction\">The family of a man who died while swimming in Sri Lanka have been told experts are only 80% certain his body was correctly identified.<\/p>\n<p>John Sims, 60, died after he went into the sea in Tangalle at about 22:00 GMT on 12 January 2013.<\/p>\n<p>The inquest into the businessman&#8217;s death heard his body was identified from a passport photo and no post-mortem examinations mentioned the presence of metal in his body.<\/p>\n<p>An open verdict was recorded.<\/p>\n<p>The inquest in Ipswich heard Mr Sims, who had businesses registered in Creeting St Peter, Suffolk, had been in Sri Lanka for almost a month before he died.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"image-and-copyright-container\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"js-image-replace\" src=\"https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/320\/cpsprodpb\/4190\/production\/_103648761_091b6f0a-fb8b-494c-bbf6-34dd5f2d95da.jpg\" alt=\"Suffolk coroner's court\" width=\"613\" height=\"345\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p>It was heard he had gone for a swim after dinner and his companion raised the alarm when he had not returned after 20 or 30 minutes.<\/p>\n<p>Sri Lankan authorities found his body in the early hours of the morning.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"story-body__crosshead\">&#8216;Cursory&#8217; post mortem<\/h2>\n<p>It was heard tests revealed the father of five had previously suffered a heart attack, which his family disputed.<\/p>\n<p>In a report, a dental specialist said the likelihood the body found was his was &#8220;at least 80%&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The family, who were at the inquest, said Mr Sims&#8217; body was &#8220;covered in scars&#8221; but there was no mention of them in the report from Sri Lanka nor after his body had been returned to Suffolk.<\/p>\n<p>They said they informed specialists he had a titanium structure in his back and had undergone a hip replacement, but these were not mentioned in any report, it was heard.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, the height given for Mr Sims was incorrect, according to the family, who dispute the body was Mr Sims.<\/p>\n<p>Assistant coroner Dan Sharpstone said there were &#8220;a lot of holes in this case&#8221; and described the Sri Lankan post-mortem examination as &#8220;cursory&#8221;.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Courtesy\u00a0BBC The family of a man who died while swimming in Sri Lanka have been told experts are only 80% certain his body was correctly identified.
