{"id":83682,"date":"2018-11-26T05:59:37","date_gmt":"2018-11-26T12:59:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.lankaweb.com\/news\/items\/?p=83682"},"modified":"2018-11-26T05:59:37","modified_gmt":"2018-11-26T12:59:37","slug":"seven-member-judge-bench-for-petitions-on-parliament-dissolution","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lankaweb.com\/news\/items\/2018\/11\/26\/seven-member-judge-bench-for-petitions-on-parliament-dissolution\/","title":{"rendered":"Seven-member judge bench for petitions on parliament dissolution"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>Courtesy Adaderana<\/em><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Chief Justice has appointed a seven-member full judge bench to hear the petitions filed against the dissolution of the parliament.<\/p>\n<p>The justices appointed to the bench are,<\/p>\n<p>Nalin Perera<br \/>\nBuwaneka Aluwihare<br \/>\nSisira de Abrew<br \/>\nPriyantha Jayawardena<br \/>\nPrasanna Jayawardena<br \/>\nVijith Malalgoda<br \/>\nMurdu Fernando<\/p>\n<p>Thirteen fundamental rights petitions were filed at the Supreme Court asking it to declare that the President\u2019s order to dissolve the parliament is illegal.<\/p>\n<p>The petitions have been filed by political parties including United National Party (UNP), Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP), the Tamil National Alliance (TNA), Tamil Progressive Alliance (TPA) and the All Ceylon People\u2019s Congress. Organisations and activists such as the Centre for Policy Alternatives (CPA), Attorney Aruna Laksiri and also a member of Elections Commission Prof. S. R. H. Hoole have also filed petitions.<\/p>\n<p>Accordingly, the Supreme Court has issued an interim order temporarily suspending the Gazette notification issued by the President on the dissolution of Parliament. An interim order was also issued on the Elections Commission preventing the holding of a general election.<\/p>\n<p>The stay orders have been issued effective until December 7 and the petitions have been fixed for argument on December 4, 5 and 6.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Courtesy Adaderana Chief Justice has appointed a seven-member full judge bench to hear the petitions filed against the dissolution of the parliament.
