Clarke Institute for Space\u00a0Education said here Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>The satellite, which will be named RAAVANA-1, is a research satellite built by two Sri Lankan students from the\u00a0University of Peradeniya and the Arthur C Clarke Institute for Modern Technologies.<\/p>\n<p>The satellite was designed and built at the Kyushu Institute of Technology in Japan and is 1000 cubic centimeters in size and weighs 1.1 kilogram.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"attachment-jnews-1140x570  wp-post-image lazyautosizes lazyloaded\" src=\"https:\/\/newsin.asia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/satellite-1140x570.jpg\" sizes=\"auto, 750px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/newsin.asia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/satellite-1140x570.jpg 1140w, https:\/\/newsin.asia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/satellite-360x180.jpg 360w, https:\/\/newsin.asia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/satellite-750x375.jpg 750w\" alt=\"Sri Lanka to launch its first satellite in April\" width=\"711\" height=\"356\" data-src=\"https:\/\/newsin.asia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/satellite-1140x570.jpg\" data-sizes=\"auto\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/newsin.asia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/satellite-1140x570.jpg 1140w, https:\/\/newsin.asia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/satellite-360x180.jpg 360w, https:\/\/newsin.asia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/satellite-750x375.jpg 750w\" data-expand=\"700\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Local media reports said the RAAVANA-1 was officially handed over to the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency\u00a0on February 18, and will be sent to the International Space Station on April 17, through the assistance of Cygnus-1, a spacecraft from the United States.<\/p>\n<p>The satellite is expected to fulfill five missions including the capturing of pictures of Sri Lanka and its surrounding regions.<\/p>\n<p>The RAAVANA-1 is expected to orbit 400 kilometers away from earth.
