{"id":86038,"date":"2019-03-03T15:03:09","date_gmt":"2019-03-03T22:03:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.lankaweb.com\/news\/items\/?p=86038"},"modified":"2019-03-03T15:03:09","modified_gmt":"2019-03-03T22:03:09","slug":"students-swap-classroom-for-sri-lankan-jungle-stopping-elephants-from-destroying-crops","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lankaweb.com\/news\/items\/2019\/03\/03\/students-swap-classroom-for-sri-lankan-jungle-stopping-elephants-from-destroying-crops\/","title":{"rendered":"Students swap classroom for Sri Lankan jungle, stopping elephants from destroying crops"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 class=\"bylinepromo\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/alicesprings\/\">ABC Alice Springs<\/a>\u00a0By\u00a0<a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/emma-haskin\/9126236\" target=\"_self\">Emma Haskin<\/a><\/em><\/span><\/h2>\n<div>\n<p class=\"first\">Five students from Alice Springs have swapped their classroom for the jungles of Sri Lanka, helping to keep elephants from crops and building a school for primary students.<\/p>\n<p>St Philips College is one of 18 schools across Australia to get involved with Round Square \u2014 a global charity providing experiential learning and character education for students.<\/p>\n<p>Since getting involved with the organisation in 1996, the college has taken more than 50 students to at least 10 countries.<\/p>\n<p>Vocational education and training coordinator Kate Anderson took the students to Wasgamuwa National Park for three weeks to take part in the charity&#8217;s Big Build project.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2019-03-02\/elephants\/10853472\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Elephants\" src=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/image\/10808626-3x2-700x467.jpg\" alt=\"Elephants grazing near farmland in Sri Lanka\" width=\"700\" height=\"467\" \/><br \/>\n<\/a><a class=\"inline-caption\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2019-03-02\/elephants\/10853472\"><strong>PHOTO:<\/strong>\u00a0Elephants grazing near farmland in Sri Lanka.\u00a0<span class=\"source\">(Supplied: Kate Anderson)<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The human elephant conflict is a huge problem over there,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The booming population has meant that cities are bigger and parklands are smaller.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The elephants need specific migratory patterns. They also provide a source of income for the farmers being able to sell the oranges.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Ms Anderson said elephants and humans were dying as a result of the conflict.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"quote--pullquote\"><p>&#8220;On day three at one of our farms, the farmer pointed out the elephant footprints where an elephant had walked through his farm a week before \u2014 and they were the size of dinner plates,&#8221; she said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;So yeah, that certainly puts into perspective the danger that they face every single day.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"inline-content photo full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2019-03-02\/mother-elephant-in-sri-lanka\/10853462\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Mother elephant in Sri Lanka\" src=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/image\/10808866-3x2-700x467.jpg\" alt=\"Mother elephant in Sri Lanka\" width=\"700\" height=\"467\" \/><\/a><a class=\"inline-caption\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2019-03-02\/mother-elephant-in-sri-lanka\/10853462\"><strong>PHOTO:<\/strong>\u00a0The elephants in Sri Lanka have specific migratory paths, which can increase conflict between the animals and farmers.\u00a0<span class=\"source\">(Supplied: Kate Anderson)<\/span><\/a><\/div>\n<p>Jessica Nowland, 17, helped build a classroom and a computer room for the community there.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"quote--pullquote\"><p>&#8220;We also did some clearing so that the school could have a new cricket pitch. The trees. It&#8217;s quite indescribable to be surrounded by so much life,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You would look in one spot and there&#8217;d be birds and flowers of all different colours. It was just absolutely beautiful.
