{"id":86372,"date":"2019-03-13T14:51:25","date_gmt":"2019-03-13T21:51:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.lankaweb.com\/news\/items\/?p=86372"},"modified":"2019-03-13T14:59:45","modified_gmt":"2019-03-13T21:59:45","slug":"einsteen-child-genius-nishi-uggalle-13-on-why-shes-proud-to-be-a-science-and-physics-loving-geek-for-girls-everywhere","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lankaweb.com\/news\/items\/2019\/03\/13\/einsteen-child-genius-nishi-uggalle-13-on-why-shes-proud-to-be-a-science-and-physics-loving-geek-for-girls-everywhere\/","title":{"rendered":"EINSTEEN Child Genius Nishi Uggalle, 13, on why she\u2019s proud to be a science and physics-loving geek for girls everywhere"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>By Kate Jackson\u00a0Courtesy The Sun (UK)<\/em><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Last weekend Channel 4 viewers watched in awe as the teen with a higher IQ than Einstein was crowned Child Genius 2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__content article__content--intro\">ON her tenth birthday, Nishi Uggalle raced into her parents\u2019 bedroom to see if her dream could finally come true.<\/p>\n<p>She pleaded: Can I take the Mensa IQ test now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>An unusual request from such a young girl perhaps, but then Nishi is far from usual.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"article__media\">\n<div class=\"article__media-img-container open-gallery\" data-index=\"0\">\n<div class=\"article__gallery-count theme__background-color-rgba-80\"><\/div>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"article__media-caption\">Demonstrating incredible drive, Nishi spends her spare time reading philosophy and carrying out complicated maths questions . . . &#8216;for fun&#8217;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"article__media\">\n<div class=\"article__media-img-container open-gallery\" data-index=\"1\">\n<div class=\"article__gallery-count theme__background-color-rgba-80\">Parents Neelanga and his wife Shiromi, insist they\u2019re not the pushy ones &#8211; they have to drag Nishi away from her books<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Six months later, when she became eligible to take the high IQ society\u2019s test, she achieved the highest possible score of 162 \u2014 topping brainbox Albert Einstein\u2019s 160.<\/p>\n<div class=\"advert-wrapper advert-wrapper--outstream\">\n<div id=\"outstream\" class=\"dfp-ad advert--outstream\">\u00a0And last weekend \u00a0viewers watched in awe as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/tvandshowbiz\/8551018\/child-genius-2019-winner-einstein-acceptance-speech\/\">Nishi was crowned Child Genius 2019<\/a>.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Out of the hundreds of children who applied for Channel 4\u2019s annual hunt for bright youngsters, 19 were chosen to compete in the series presented by Richard Osman.<\/p>\n<p>Displaying an astonishing level of general knowledge, Nishi, from Audenshaw, Greater Manchester, answered questions that would stump most adults to take the title.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"article__media\">\n<div class=\"article__media-img-container open-gallery\" data-index=\"2\">\n<div class=\"article__gallery-count theme__background-color-rgba-80\">Nishi&#8217;s parents often tell her to leave her books to come and watch TV with them<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<figure class=\"article__media\">\n<div class=\"article__media-img-container open-gallery\" data-index=\"3\">\n<div class=\"article__gallery-count theme__background-color-rgba-80\">The universe fascinates Nishi<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>She said: I was really nervous but I just had to ignore my emotions and focus on the questions. I really wanted to show girls that they can achieve anything they want to.<\/p>\n<div class=\"advert-wrapper advert-wrapper--articlempu\">\n<div id=\"articlempu\" class=\"dfp-ad advert--inarticle\">\u00a0Sometimes girls are put off science and maths, they think they are boys\u2019 subjects, but I hope to show we are all equally capable.\u201d<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Since then, the 13-year-old has acquired a celebrity-like status at Altrincham Grammar School for Girls. She said: It\u2019s been crazy. After the show\u2019s maths episode, people I didn\u2019t even know in older years were saying \u2018Well done\u2019 to me.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve had people asking me for my autograph. Some asked me to sign their hands.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>\u2018I LIKE TO CHALLENGE MYSELF\u2019<\/h3>\n<figure class=\"article__media\">\n<div class=\"article__media-img-container open-gallery\" data-index=\"4\">\n<div class=\"article__gallery-count theme__background-color-rgba-80\"><\/div>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"article__media-caption\">Nishi, who hopes to be a theoretical physicist at Cambridge, like her idol Stephen Hawking<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"article__media\">\n<div class=\"article__media-img-container open-gallery\" data-index=\"5\">\n<div class=\"article__gallery-count theme__background-color-rgba-80\">At the weekend, Nishi&#8217;s parents take her to the Peak District to help her get away from her books for a breath of fresh air<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Her dad Neelanga calls her a human calculator\u201d and likens her to Sheldon Cooper, the idiosyncratic genius in the American sitcom The Big Bang Theory. After Nishi won Child Genius, Neelanga jokingly asked the testers if they could give her some more questions because she had been so happy during the competition\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Nishi said: I am a bit like Sheldon. I am the person who actually reads the Terms and Conditions of things and I\u2019m quite possessive about my spot in the lounge, like he is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The image of a child genius is often a kid who is dragged from tutor to tutor by insistent parents, being forced into Mandarin lessons and chess club.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"article__quote\">\n<div class=\"article__quote-copy theme__before-color theme__after-color\">\n<p>I am a geek. I\u2019m proud to be one. Some of the most successful people in the world are geeks, like Bill Gates<\/p>\n<p>Yet Sri Lankan-born Neelanga and his wife Shiromi, insist they\u2019re not the pushy ones. Mum Shiromi, 45, an accountant, said: We\u2019re the ones telling her to put her books down. We have to say, \u2018You\u2019ve spent enough time on your homework, come and watch TV with us\u2019.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>At the weekend we like to go out to the Peak District, to go cycling or hiking as a family. Nishi tries to sneak a physics book in the car and I have to tell her to stop reading and look outside instead.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nishi, who hopes to be a theoretical physicist at Cambridge, like her idol Stephen Hawking, doesn\u2019t do any formal extracurricular activities, nor does she attend a private school.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"article__media\">\n<div class=\"article__media-img-container open-gallery\" data-index=\"6\">\n<div class=\"article__gallery-count theme__background-color-rgba-80\">Nishi was able to read at three, although she initially hid her talent from her father, fearing he would no longer read her a bedtime story<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<figure class=\"article__media\">\n<div class=\"article__media-img-container open-gallery\" data-index=\"7\">\n<div class=\"article__gallery-count theme__background-color-rgba-80\">Out and about like any &#8216;normal&#8217; child<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>But demonstrating incredible drive, she spends her spare time reading philosophy and carrying out complicated maths questions . . . for fun\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>She also builds remote-control Lego robots, without instructions, and is teaching herself how to play piano.<\/p>\n<p>To top it all, she\u2019s also a sickeningly talented artist.<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019re a geek, there\u2019s no doubt about that,\u201d teases dad Neelanga, 46, who works in IT security at Barclays bank. Nishi agrees: I am a geek. I\u2019m proud to be one. It used to be a derogatory term but I think it\u2019s a positive now. Some of the most successful people in the world were geeks, like Bill Gates.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Three years ago, Nishi was captivated by the film The Theory Of Everything, about the life of the late Professor Hawking.<\/p>\n<p>She said: Afterwards I borrowed A Brief History Of Time from the library, and really enjoyed it. I\u2019ve read about ten of his books now.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"article__media\">\n<div class=\"article__media-img-container open-gallery\" data-index=\"8\">\n<div class=\"article__gallery-count theme__background-color-rgba-80\">It was a close final, but Nishi came out on top<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<figure class=\"article__media\">\n<div class=\"article__media-img-container open-gallery\" data-index=\"9\">\n<div class=\"article__gallery-count theme__background-color-rgba-80\">She stunned audiences with her feminist victory speech<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Professor Hawking\u2019s determination was incredible. To present quite controversial ideas in physics at the time, and to achieve what he did, all with his illness too, is incredible. I find questions about the universe and black holes fascinating.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019d love to follow a similar path to Professor Hawking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the evenings Nishi spends around an hour and a half on her homework. She tries not to go over two hours\u201d, before relaxing with one of the many brainiac books on her shelf. She said: I\u2019ll read a physics book or I\u2019ll do some A-level calculus. Sometimes, in school, I find the maths quite easy so I like to challenge myself.<\/p>\n<p>You have to push yourself otherwise you get bored of things.\u201d The only subjects that don\u2019t come easily are dance and drama.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"article__media\">\n<div class=\"article__media-img-container open-gallery\" data-index=\"10\">\n<div class=\"article__gallery-count theme__background-color-rgba-80\">By the time she should have been in Year Four at school, Nishi had been fast-tracked to Year Six<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<figure class=\"article__media\">\n<div class=\"article__media-img-container open-gallery\" data-index=\"11\">\n<div class=\"article__gallery-count theme__background-color-rgba-80\">Lego and books were easy for Nishi as a toddler<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>But Nishi was a high achiever right from the start. Mum Shiromi said: When Nishi was just 18 months old we made a home video of her going through an A-B-C book saying \u2018A for apple, B for bear\u2019, and so on. She couldn\u2019t say some of the words properly, of course, but we realised she would use the same word again and again for the same thing so we knew she wasn\u2019t just babbling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>An only child, Nishi was able to read at three, although she initially hid her talent from her father, fearing he would no longer read her a bedtime story if he knew she could do it herself.<\/p>\n<p>At Poplar Street Primary School, Nishi\u2019s abilities were quickly noticed. Within two weeks she was put on the Gifted and Talented programme for exceptional pupils, despite only turning four the previous month.<\/p>\n<p>Six months later, having sped through the reading levels for her age, she was moved to Year One. By the time she should have been in Year Four, she was in Year Six, and despite being three years younger than the oldest pupils in her class, she was beating them to top marks in weekly maths quizzes.<\/p>\n<h4>HARD WORK ETHIC<\/h4>\n<figure class=\"article__media\">\n<div class=\"article__media-img-container open-gallery\" data-index=\"12\">\n<div class=\"article__credit\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"article__gallery-count theme__background-color-rgba-80\">With her proud parents<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<figure class=\"article__media\">\n<div class=\"article__media-img-container open-gallery\" data-index=\"13\">\n<div class=\"article__gallery-count theme__background-color-rgba-80\">When asked who was responsible for applying to Child Genius, Nishi\u2019s mum rolls her eyes, nods towards her daughter and says: &#8216;Who do you think?&#8217;<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Socially, Nishi never had a problem fitting in and has stayed pals with the ones she made in each year group. She said: I\u2019ve always been able to make friends when I\u2019ve moved class or school.<\/p>\n<p>The older girls were really good, they mothered me a bit and even the boys were really caring.\u201d Having reached Year Six ahead of time, Nishi then attended a private primary school as a stop-gap for a couple of years before secondary school. She earned her place at Altrincham Grammar \u2014 a school outside her catchment area \u2014 by being one of the top ten scorers in the 11-plus entrance exam.<\/p>\n<p>When asked who was responsible for applying to Child Genius, Nishi\u2019s mum rolls her eyes, nods towards her daughter and says: Who do you think?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While her parents may not push their daughter to excel, there is no doubt their work ethic underlies Nishi\u2019s success.<\/p>\n<p>Neelanga and Shiromi grew up five miles apart in Padukka, \u00a0Sri Lanka, but didn\u2019t meet until they started working. Both came from middle- class backgrounds, with parents in teaching, business and the civil service, and both studied at good schools in the capital, Colombo. Neelanga gained an IT qualification and joined the British Council.
