Azeez, Sri Lanka\u2019s\nPermanent Representative in Geneva, addressing an interactive Panel Discussion\nheld at the Graduate Institute of Geneva as part of the Geneva Sustainability\nWeek.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At\nthe interactive Panel Discussion \u2018Our Plastic Future: Can the Oceans Survive?\u2019\nwhere a number of participants actively engaged, Ambassador Azeez elaborated\nSri Lanka\u2019s efforts and commitment towards achieving effective and\nnon-discriminatory global environmental governance, highlighting further the\nmeasures taken by Sri Lanka in this context, including at the recently\nconcluded Fourth Session of the United Nations Environment Assembly in Nairobi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sri\nLanka\u2019s strategic path for sustainability 2030 has, as its central focus,\nenvironmentally sound development activities, complemented by international\nassistance including technical assistance and sharing of know-how\u201d, he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ambassador\nAzeez also highlighted the constructive role and contribution that Sri Lanka\nhas made, over decades, to matters of multilateral concern impacting the nature\nand the environment, referring specifically to the leadership given by Sri\nLanka in areas such as the Law of the Sea and innovative initiatives taken in\nrelation to biodiversity, transboundary movement of hazardous waste and trade\nin endangered species.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He\nalso drew the attention of the audience to substantive arrangements that are\nunderway to host the 18<sup>th<\/sup> Conference of Parties to the the\nConvention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora\n(CITES), in Colombo, from 23 May to 3 June 2019.&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Permanent Mission of Sri Lanka to the UN, Geneva A study of the health effects of marine plastic pollution and micro-plastics is important for strengthening national and global initiatives to combat plastic pollution of our oceans\u201d, stressed Ambassador A.L.A.
