The delegation\nof the United Nations Subcommittee on Prevention of Torture (SPT) has visited\nthe Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The SPT\nDelegation met with Dr. Deepika Udagama, Chairperson of the Commission and\nCommissioners Ms. Ramani Muttetuwegama and Ms. Ambika Satkunanathan and\ndiscussed issues of mutual concern and interest on 04 April.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The delegation\nis composed of Victor Zaharia, Head of Delegation (Republic of Moldova),\nSatyabhooshun Gupt Domah (Mauritius), Petros Michaelides (Cyprus), and June\nLopez (Philippines).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The UN\u2019s torture\nprevention body is visiting Sri Lanka from 2 to 12 April to examine the\ntreatment of people deprived of their liberty and the safeguards in place for\ntheir protection against torture and ill-treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to\nmeeting with the Human Rights Commission and civil society organizations, the\nfour-member delegation will also meet government officials and hold discussions\nwith relevant ministries. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their talks in\nColombo will focus on advising and assisting the Sri Lankan authorities\nregarding the measures they must take to be in compliance with the obligations\ncontained in the Optional Protocol to the UN Convention against Torture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Subcommittee\nwill be visiting places of deprivation of liberty and will hold discussions on\nSri Lanka establishing an independent National Preventive Mechanism. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Optional\nProtocol, which Sri Lanka ratified in 2017, requires such a mechanism to be\nestablished with the authority and capacity to undertake preventive visits to any\nplace where persons may be deprived of their liberty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During our\nvisit we will be exploring the steps Sri Lanka needs to take to effectively\nprevent torture and ill-treatment of people deprived of their liberty,\u201d said\nVictor Zaharia<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I suspect this to\nbe another attempt to interfere with the internal affairs of this country where\nthe Western groups with vested interests in collaboration with Tamil Diaspora is\ntrying to collect cooked up data against the Government of this country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why does the\nGovernment allow this type of biased delegations to visit this country to\ncreate more headache in addition to damages done by such groups visited in the\nrecent past. Their itinerary and the list of people they intend to meet clearly\nshows their hidden motives. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why cant the\nGovernment ask them to go home without interfering in our internal matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why do these\npeople come only now to find faults with the government?. Why didn\u2019t they come\nwhen the LTTE was murdering and torturing thousands for 30 long years. Where\nwere they then. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

 These are serious issues the Government takes\nimmediately, if there is one in this country.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
