{"id":88365,"date":"2019-05-07T14:11:27","date_gmt":"2019-05-07T21:11:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.lankaweb.com\/news\/items\/?p=88365"},"modified":"2019-05-07T14:11:27","modified_gmt":"2019-05-07T21:11:27","slug":"possible-mass-non-compliance-in-sri-lanka-and-role-of-clergy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lankaweb.com\/news\/items\/2019\/05\/07\/possible-mass-non-compliance-in-sri-lanka-and-role-of-clergy\/","title":{"rendered":"Possible Mass Non Compliance in Sri Lanka and Role of Clergy"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>Dr Sarath Obeysekera\u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n<p>Government invoked emergency with two intentions.One is to\ncarry out raids and inspections , not only to arrest culprits but to arrest the\nsituation of excallating violence.Secondly to keep public indoor so that\nskirmishes in the streets are minimised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What happened in Negombo is a clear example, where people\nwere trying to lake the law into their hands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yesterday parents decided not to comply wither government\nruling that children should attend schools.Percentage of children attending\nschools was abmisible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was not a strike per say but ignoring requests by the\ngovernment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As per the laws in Sri Lanka it is a must that children\nartend to schools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This may be just a start of Noncompliance  with the rules\nand regulations because people may not be trusting what government tells.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Next action may be that people will refuse to obey rules\nrelated to day to day to life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>People may dump garbage every where.People May drive without\ncomplying &nbsp;traffic rules.People may not obey judiciary and law and\norder.People may stop paying-taxes<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Government should establish trust among people..So far\ngovernment has failed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hats off to armed forces for controlling the situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yesterday we saw how His Emminence Cardinal visiting Negombo\nand passifying aggrieved People.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Main-idea is that People should at least listen to religious\nleaders rather than rulers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But none of the politicians like crying MPs in the area\ndared to go to the &nbsp;location!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If and When &nbsp;there are skirmishes in the areas of\npredominantly Buddhist ,have you ever seen any Chief Sanganayake visiting the\nareas and talk to both &nbsp;parties to avoid excallations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Catholics may not be trusting government but they trust\nreligious leaders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cardinal just preached what Jesus Christ advocated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a Buddhist I am ashamed to note that most of our Buddhist\nLeading Monks never go to people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They want people to come to them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Whenever they give TV interviews ,they talk aggressively\nleading to more and more discontent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is high time for the Government to impose Emergency Law\nin full force and gag the press so that they do not aggravate the Non\nCompliance with rules and regulations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All the prelates leading Malwatu,Asgiri ,Rammana ,Siam\nNikaya\u2019s &nbsp;etc should visit the areas in turns and preach non violence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No politicians should accompany them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I am sure that people will abide by the rules after such\naction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If an attack happened in a Buddhist Area in Sri Lanka there\nwould have been a Killing Field\u201d like in Cambodia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Various interviews shown in TV and radio and published\nnewspapers should be stopped with social media gagging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Army with the help of clergy should visit people should take\nthe lead and let politicians sleep for few weeks\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Dr Sarath Obeysekera\u00a0 Government invoked emergency with two intentions.One is to carry out raids and inspections , not only to arrest culprits but to arrest the situation of excallating violence.Secondly to keep public indoor so that skirmishes in the streets are minimised.
