{"id":89763,"date":"2019-06-03T04:36:20","date_gmt":"2019-06-03T11:36:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.lankaweb.com\/news\/items\/?p=89763"},"modified":"2019-06-03T04:36:20","modified_gmt":"2019-06-03T11:36:20","slug":"schools-in-sri-lanka-with-religious-alienation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lankaweb.com\/news\/items\/2019\/06\/03\/schools-in-sri-lanka-with-religious-alienation\/","title":{"rendered":"Schools in Sri Lanka with religious alienation"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>Dr Sarath Obeysekera<\/em><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n<p>In\nColombo we have catholic\/Christian schools such as St Bridget\u2019s, Mehodist\n.Ladies .Bishops etc. which are almost private schools <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then\nwe have all male schools such as St Josephs .St Peters .St Thomas .St Benedicts,\nCarey etc. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>.Most\nof the Buddhist schools except Museus are state schools like Ananda Nalanda\n.Thurstan,Isipapathana ,Mahanama etc .and all girls schools like Devi Balika\n.Visaka ,Gothami ,etc .<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In\nJaffna you find sought after school like Hartley College ,St Patrick.Jaffna\nCentral .St Johsn .St Xavior ect with Tamil being being taught in parallel with\nEnglish the tamils earmark sending the children abroad .<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mostly\nBuddhist parents tend to send children to state Buddhist schools expecting them\nto enter university to be doctors or engineers .<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Catholic\nparents prefer children studying in a religious environment in schools where\nEnglish knowledge is vastly improved Private sector hires them due to their\nposh upbringing and English fluency as Executives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lately\n&nbsp;we have Muslim schools called Madarasa\nwhere the children learn Arabic and hardly any Sinhala but fluent in Tami.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In\nEngland there are private schools for girls and boys and also grammar schools\nwhere children can enter after an entrance exam irrespective of their color and\nreligion.&nbsp; &nbsp;Few schools like Eton, and Harrows Paul\u2019s may\ntake only children of well to do families who aim to enter universities like\nOxford and Cambridge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Questions is why in Sri Lanka we have such a segregation of schools?
