Abstract<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The time has come to\nchallenge the hype that Sri Lanka won independence from Britain in 1948\nexclusively by our own local efforts through an exchange of correspondence and\npolitical negotiations without any supportive foreign factor. This British\ncentric – friendly narrative is increasingly unsustainable in the light of new\nevidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Moreover, it is political\ncorrectness and tendency to please our former colonial rulers that has\nprevented an objective appraisal being undertaken taking into account the external\nfactors that contributed substantially towards the gaining of freedom from\ncolonial rule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is indisputable that\nJapan struck the greatest decisive blow ever by any non \u2013 white country or non\n\u2013 white people to European power in Asia with the attack on Pearl\nHarbour.  In about 90 days beginning on December 8, 1941, Japan overran\nthe possessions of Britain, the US and the Netherlands in east and south-east\nAsia, taking the Philippines, Singapore, Malaya, Hong Kong, the Dutch East\nIndies; much of Siam and French Indochina and Burma with bewildering swiftness\nto stand poised at the borders of India by early 1942.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Within less than a decade\nof the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour on Dec. 7, 1941, India, Burma and\nCeylon were granted independence. At the commencement of the Second World War\non Sept. 03, 1939, there was not even an empty promise or hint on the part of\nBritain to give freedom to its colonies.   We were lucky. Freedom\ncame to Ceylon on a platter. How?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What are the factors that\npushed Britain to withdraw hastily from India and in turn discard its control\nover Burma and Ceylon having lost the Jewel in the British crown?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
