When\na plethora of concerns are emerging all revolving around secretly signed\nagreements compromising Sri Lanka\u2019s sovereignty and officials are not defending\nthe Nation in view of their divided loyalties, it is the right of every taxpaying\ncitizen to pose questions and demand answers. Everyone enjoying perks of office\nare doing so because of the taxpayer grants them these privileges \u2013 is it too\nmuch to expect that in return for all that they enjoy, they defend the sovereignty\n& territorial integrity of Sri Lanka & its People? No taxpayer is\nburdening themselves to maintain a Government apparatus that makes them\nfacilitate agreements that allows foreign troops to land as & when they\nlike I,n Sri Lanka make use of Sri Lanka\u2019s airports, ports, harbours & land\n& not be guilty for any violation to Sri Lanka\u2019s territory or its people. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
What is the role of a country\u2019s foreign\nministry & its diplomats & staff?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n A\ncountry\u2019s foreign ministry is important for several reasons. It is the channel\nthat formulates the nation\u2019s foreign policy and promotes the policy abroad via\nsocial, cultural, economic political interactions while defending the interests\nof the State and the government at regional & international forums. <\/p>\n\n\n\n In\nother words, the foreign ministry takes a country to the world and brings the\nworld into his\/her country. Essentially, the foreign ministry, its diplomats\n& staff are expected to be the face of their nation in the international\narena. Diplomats & staff are the agents of the State expected to function\non behalf of that state and not any other. <\/p>\n\n\n\n It\nis for this reason that all members of the foreign ministry must be citizens of\na country. Dual citizens have divided loyalties. The question of dual\ncitizenship does not arise for ordinary citizens who have worked or lived\noverseas and at some point in time wish to live in both countries and are\nmonetarily contributing to both countries.
